Report: 2011 Ford Super Duty to Get New 6.7-Liter Power Stroke V8

Ford is set to release a revolutionary new 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine for its line of Super Duty F-Series trucks in 2011. The all-new engine promises a, “significant improvement in torque, horsepower and fuel economy,” says Ford in a press release, stating that this new F-Series Super Duty would continue to be a class leader in both payload and towing.

Numerous high-tech innovations have been employed in building this new engine, starting with a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block that Ford says is twice as strong as standard iron blocks. This was deemed necessary due to the increases in power output.

The new engine makes use of a Honeywell single variable turbine turbo (similar to the one found on the Porsche 911 Turbo), but takes turbo technology a step further still. Instead of one, there are two compressor wheels driven off a single turbine impeller, working like a bi-turbo setup that gives the engine a fast response time with little lag as well as the power of a larger turbo.

Visually, the new engine looks remarkably different, due to the fact that the intake and exhaust systems are the reverse of a conventional engine. The exhaust manifolds sit in the valley of the big V8 engine, while the intake manifold is on the outside. This means the cylinder heads are essentially flipped around.

By significantly reducing the amount of exhaust piping, lag is reduced considerably. Additionally, this new packaging moves the hotter elements of the engine (like the turbocharger and exhaust pipes) away from the intake areas, ensuring a constant supply of cool air to the engine. And as for that turbo, it sits in the valley between the cylinder banks. Due to its location, spool up is considerably faster and the engine's overall balance is improved. Another major benefit of this setup is that that cab no longer has to be removed from the frame if work needs to be done on the turbo. The fuel-pump, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) components and the thermostats are also easily accessible from the front of the vehicle.

Ford hasn't released any specifics on the new engine but if out scientific and sophisticated brains have understood all this talk of a sequential variable turbine geometry turbo correctly, our power-loving neanderthal brains are in for a real treat when this new package makes it to market.

isnt this new diesel a urea dependent design for elimination of NoX? so then we will all need to keep an eye on our urea tanks.

If it gets better diesel fuel mileage but also has to have the urea then the effective mpg which I figure as $$$$ per mile could remain the same or even be higher. If something doubles my mileage but itself costs me 6 times per gallon more then I have not saved any money.

I have been rattling cages at two local dealerships with not a word on release of this beast. In the BlueOval pages Engineers are chatting up about how it will start production in as soon as Nov this year and could be Job build #1 as soon as Feb. details are cloudy as to exact confirmation as just in Ca. alone emmisions will have to be met.

Over 400 HP and 720 ft lbs. and better fuel mileage screams buy me but the urea issue( which really isn't much of an issue if F takes the lead and treats it with oil changes) is something to keep in the recesses of your mind.

This is an all F built product as the connection with Navistar has been severed on Powerstrokes. That being said, the Powerstrioke title will remain in place.. according to sources in BlueOval.. but the name Scorpion is stamped on it. There is a whole fact sheet on that engine which is pretty awesome even to me.. a non-mechanic.

I have been following this project in depth as I just ordered a 2010 F-450 King ranch. I was considering holding off on the build-out to wait for the 6.7L beast however trips are planned for next summer and the 2010 is a beast in its own right. The salesreps get visits by Engineers who talk of upcoming projects with dates that do not seem to ever get met...according to a few I spoke with.

Six months for the 2011 would be fine but I cannot get anyone to confirm Job #1 so I may own this 2010 F-450 4x4 King Ranch for a year and lose it for a new one...maybe. Yes, I will eat a few bucks and pay more but I want one more truck to take me until the end of days. I am a F man.. enough said. Plus the incentives to move the last of the 09s and last in line 10s which are just starting production ( just got confirmation yesterday mine is starting build-out) is a phenom not to miss.

And the stock is in the low 7's!

Yes, they said some/most trucks will only need a refill at oil change. I expect they sized the tank with that design goal.
Refilling the tank is fine with me if the engine meets the rumored specs.

Scorpion needs Urea injection, Maxxforce 7 does NOT

you know the Maxxforce 7 as the 6.4L Powerstroke. I had a chnage to drive a International 4400 hauler last week and have been researching their upcoming offerings.

Low and behold the Maxxforce website shares the tidbit that the Maxxforce engines meet 2010 emissions with no SCR.

Imagine that. Did we just get stung by a Scorpion?

The maxxforce 7 is hardly a successful engine. The "heavy burden" of urea should be less than the "nightmare" of replacing washer fluid. I'm up for the extra work.
It's not like ford is the only company going to urea.
Ford wouldn't be doing the change without a loss of confidence in the maxxforce line. In the current economy it's the last thing their senior management would want.
I hope the new engine leads to a new 4 litter diesel design. But I suppose it could be another problem engine and a dead end.

Aluminum heads huh? Well don't that beat all.
And inboard exhaust? Seems like Ford is copying the the General. Too bad GM put their minimax on hold now they don't have the bragging rights for the first production diesel with inboard exhaust.
