Ok. I have an 04 6.0 with an Edge/Attitude, and a Banks 4" exhaust. I have heard trucks come and go that whistle like crazy out the exhaust pipe, not just the turbo spooling, you can actually hear it whistle out the exhaust. I have tried removing the cat, and then the muffler, and then putting the cat back in without the muffler!!! The only one that worked was with no cat and no muffler, but the thing sounds like A$$ under any kind of load! Does anyone know what these guys are doing or are they also having crap sounding trucks at full throttle? I read something about the "silencer ring" but I thought that just made noise up front, not out the back. HELP!!!

If you are talking about a whistling/vacuum cleaner sound at idle, that is pretty much what the ones I've heard sound like. Many of us (and bystanders) liken it to a turbine jet engine under the hood. My wife says that we don't have stray deer running out in front of us...it's like a deer whistle. Most people think its pretty cool for a diesel to sound that way. Seriously, at idle one gets the whistle. Under hard throttle going under an overpass, it truly sounds like the NASCAR freight train coming out of turn 4 to take the green flag at Daytona.
PS. My wife didn't like it at first but has changed her tune with the compliments that have come my way when we are out together. She just saw this reply looking over my shoulder and said "to tell him to get used to it."
More than likely your hearing a DPPI (MBRP) Turbo Back Exhaust w/o the cat. The 03's are louder than the 04's, but it's a good bet that that is the system your hearing.

My Hog system also does this and my wife had the same problems as the previous persons did, but in the end they all fall in love with it because women like attention and the discription of the Nascar coming out of turn 4 is a good one especially under the overpass. George C is correct. The 03 has a different turbo than the 04 thats why the 03 had a resinator in the down pipe to control the turbo whine. But put in a turbo back exhaust on these trucks and they are the best sounding things on the road!!! Everyone turns there heads to see whats just gone by.

If you want a loud whistle, go with a3.5" or 4" down-pipe and a 5" the rest of the way back. No muffler or the "other thing". The '04-'05's sound like a jet taxiing down a runway. I agree it's pretty cool but I have heard they also go through Back Pressure Sensors like mad. I only have a 4" turbo back system and I as well tried it all. I got as much as 1 mpg better all around with the muffler and cat in place. I also lost a bunch of bottom end torque. Never the less I have the muffler and cat back in the truck. LOL............
