04 turbo wheel question???

anyone tried replacing the quiet 04 turbo compressor wheel with old 03 wheel for a little more whistle? any ideas if they would just swap out or is the 04 turbo change more in depth than i think it is? thanks

Mike,

I think you might have been fed some bad information. The compressor wheel (and housing, for that matter) from 2003 6.0 to 2004 are aerodynamically identical. Thus, you won't be able to tell any difference by doing what you are proposing. The noise difference is more attritable to turbine end changes, ie, adding more blades to the turbine wheel. Also, 2003 trucks had a double wall wrapped downpipe; the 2004s are single wall and not wrapped (I think). This has a large effect on overall noise transmission. Remember, noise can be a systems issue, not always a component issue - a change in any component in a given exhaust system can significantly alter noise - larger aftermarket exhaust systems, for example. You get the idea.....
