Accufab Intake Elbow Leak

Well, it looks like I torqued too hard on #1 of the 4 bolts holding the elbow on and it is showing some residue seeping out. That #1 bolt is not going to tighten(it did start to strip the alloy). Has 6000 miles on it since I installed the Accufab. What are the possibilities? It is showing a smudge (thumbprint of residue) but I imagine it will get worse in time. Boost seems good. Can a speed shop tap in some kind of sleeve? Give me some ideas if you can. Thanks

Re: Intake Elbow Leak

I'm not sure how its held on or what you stripped exactly but could you drill out a size bigger and retap? How about a heli-coil? Or even a longer bolt with a nut on the other side? (not sure if it goes all the way through or not)

Re: Intake Elbow Leak

I like the longer bolt idea. Could I be that lucky??? There are 4 bolts (might call them screws) that go into what I imagine to be an alloy intake manifold of sorts, holding down the intake elbow. The first one in started twisting alloy at 18# way before the 21# stated torque. I cant get to the other side of it, but a longer bolt might just do the trick

Found this on the Accufab website:

Quote:
Accufab Performance Elbow Installation Instructions IMPORTANT NOTE: These instructions, courtesy of truckblog.com, are very complete, HOWEVER, the torque specs called out for to bolt the Accufab 6.0 Elbow to the intake base are incorrect. The bolts should be tightened to no more than 10 to 12 ft. lbs., not the 23 ft. lbs. listed in the instructions.
Hope this helps

Would've liked to have known about that one. I sheared a bolt trying to get it to spec. That was an expensive fix at Ford.

Doesnt that figure. Anyway, I called Accufab and talked with George. He said they were aware of the incorrect specs. He did offer some good advice: pickup a tap at the hardware store and see if I can repair the threads enough to hold/buy a stud a little longer than the bolt and tighten with a nut, kind of like the ARP headbolt/stud idea.
Its been a few weeks since I noticed the residue and it has not come back yet. I also have not pulled the 5er since either. I think I will start with the tap idea

After shearing the bolt, I drilled it out and ended up drilling some of the thread as well. Gave up and had it fixed by Ford.

No problems since though.
