Adding a second alternator

Hey all,

I'm looking to add a second alternator to my truck, and wondered if there was a kit available from Ford? The dealer couldn't find me a dual alternator truck when I bought mine. Any parts info or prices would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Adding a second alternator

Don't have first hand experience, but in previous rounds of this topic, people have said that it is prohibitively expensive to add a second alternator. But - there are high capacity aftermarket single units that may meet your needs.

Try searching the archives for "dual alt".

Good luck.

Re: Adding a second alternator

That is my memory/perception. That if you wanted it, you should order it as it was Cost prohibative to do it at a later time 'IF' you even could find the Ford parts to do it.

I would second the swap out of a single higher rated alternator. I can only guess it would be much easie and much cheaper?

While out searching I did not find any as yet...

Re: Adding a second alternator

You are going to need new electronics, new pulleys, new belt and tensioner, probably have to reprogram the PCM. And that is just starters.
maybe a 150 amp Alt from a boat might be a better alternative !

Re: Adding a second alternator

Urgh... sounds like more work than it's worth. I was hoping for an easy retrofit. Thanks for the suggestions all, I'll look into a large single alternator - even think I saw one in the For Sale section here.

Re: Adding a second alternator

Check over on some of the RV sites - this gets discussed a lot. I know Ford carries larger high out put ones that go on their ambulance packages, but they are pricey. Also in the after market and towing sections here try a search as I know one person just wet through this in the last 6 months or so
