Upgrades and Aftermarket - 6.0L EngineUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 2003-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.0L Power Stroke engine.
I'm not usually one to notice a great deal of change when installing relatively cheap and easy mods on any of my vehicles but I finally installed my new Magnum Force air intake on my 6.0 and all i can say is WOW what a difference Turbo spools up faster and overall torque and get their faster power is alot better. I just cant wait to order that DPP 4" exhaust thats gonna be some fun

Let's assume your 6.0L is relatively new, with a clean paper element.. Next, let's realize that the intake system is also under vacuum from the turbo. Third, lets assume that unless there is more fuel (mass) drawn into the turbo, it can't spool faster.
So, I just don't see it.
On my 7.3, which had a much worse intake and filtration system, I switched from a stock filter to a K&N without noticing much difference.
I'm not meaning to flame, but you need fuel for performance in a diesel, and not air alone.
I've got one George and it does improve turbo spool up and power slightly. Slightly is all I'll say. It is a very nice unit much better constructed than the stock. Way back I had posted a turbo whine noise issue and just thought it was what it was and there was little to do about it. My father in law a PHD mechanical engineer and builder of race cars thought it was a induction leak? I took everything apart even put a little sealer on all joints and it still made the intake whine. Guess what when I installed the AFE filter system intake whine/whistle gone, not reduced gone! They now have a upgraded filter that has much beter filtering ratings. They claim that part #71-10093 is the higher filtering insert. Check it out, you can get it for a lot less than $300 bucks.

No embellishing here. Like I said, any time i can actually notice a difference in a simple bolt on mod I get get kinda excited. There really is a difference in exceleration especially from about 1400 rpms on up it probably help that its letting in about 3 times as much air.

I don't know about the AFE system, but I got the Quadzilla Monster Intake and noticed a pretty big seat of the pants difference. I persoanlly, think the intake made just as much difference as the larger exhaust did.
George,
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the mass airflow meter measure the amount of air coming into the engine and then add fuel as needed? So, wouldn't that mean more air equals more fuel? I was under the impression that was one of the major improvements on the 6.0 vs. the 7.3.

George: try and breathe through a piece of paper held against your mouth,..... intake isn't the greatest is it?
Now try breathing in with nothing in front of your mouth.....any difference?
Of course there is!
If the diesel is only using about 80-85% of the fuel being injected, with the amount of air in a stock setup, there will definetely be an improvement when you switch to a free flowing intake because you have increased the amount of air available to burn longer and more "effiecent". You can only burn until you run out of one of the following things: AIR.....FUEL....or compression (in a diesel)
Why do you think your truck runs better with an aftermarket exhaust?
It sure isn't because it looks good, its because of BETTER FLOW. jmo Ivan
Try it, I'll bet you like it!

Actually the MAF does more than you think. It measures air volume as well as air temperature. It uses a hot wire that maintains a 392 deg above ambient temperature. It then measures the voltage to keep the hot wire at this level to determine volume and temperature. Then it provides and anolog output to the PCM based on temperature and air mass. Just a note it measuers in grams/sec. 5 volts is near 350 grams/sec. The secret to a good air intake system is one that keeps the volume in the sweet spot for the PCM!
Another note is there is also a second intake air temp sensor that is compares with so you can't do anything too tricky.
I have installed the AFE filter, and sold to a few that really wanted one. I can say that they are nice looking and fit well, and they make a difference. I can also say, (yes I am biased a little), Our intake kills the AFE for power and spool up. Now with that we make a little more noise. It also does not retain the stock look. My biggest problem with the AFE kit is that I don't feel you get the gain per dollar that you should. Granted if you read the fine print the claim +2hp peak. That is the key. They also claim a bunch more for max gain, but that sounds like something Banks would advertise. We have been averaging +20hp peak!
Next time there is a dyno event and one of you guys want to do an air filter comparison I would be happy to supply one of ours for the test.
Also I want to say I am in know way slamming the AFE. It is a nice filter, and it works as advertised, even though the advertisement is slightly misleading. I can also say if you want the stock look and no extra noise, its great, and you will feel a difference, just not what is available!
One more thing. If you have an aftermarket filter, and do not maintenance it properly, they will all let dirt in. This includes mine. If you let enough dust in you can eat away at the turbo and other parts. If you keep them clean and oiled no problem.
