Air Intake?

I would like to replace the stock air filter/intake on my 2003 F250 SD 6.0L. Not sure which one to go with. AFE vs. AIRAID vs. KN? Any thoughts or suggestions? I will eventually be adding the DPPI turbo back exhaust system to further help air flow through the system. All help would be appreciated!

Re: Air Intake?

The AFE Pro Guard 7 Magnum Force kits are the best intake upgrade on the market for the 6.0L. Check them out HERE. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Air Intake?

I just installed the ProGuard 7. A little pricy, I thought, but a good quality product. Getting the old one out and the new one in was a ***** of a project, but just be patient and follow the instructions.

I got it from DPPI. Talked to Mark on the phone and he sent it right out. Had it in two days. Nice guy to deal with.

Re: Air Intake?

Rodeodad is correct on the intake system as is Dennis at ITP. The real nice part is you get more airflow without the dirt intrusion and you're saving money as well. Go and price those OEM filters and that alone will get most folks interested in a Pro Guard 7 system.

Re: Air Intake?

The stock intake filter on the 6.0L is one of the best for air flow and dirt stopping. You might consider just keeping the air intake stock and putting the money you save towards gauges, Edge Juice or Silverline T-304 exhaust. When you go to a turbo back exhaust expect a big increase in turbo whistle in and out of the cab.

Re: Air Intake?

SuperdutyTD,

You're exactly correct, the replacement systems are worth it even if they didn't flow a ton more air just in factory replacement filter costs. In fact in another thread I'm selling three factory filters as I won't be neding them for just that reason.

The PG7 system has proven via specs from AFE and users here on the board that more air helps build more HP and torque sooner and lowers EGT's as well. Call us if you need us!

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, the stock filters are a little pricey, but keep in mind the three things that help the Powerstroke live a long healthy life are clean fuel, clean oil and clean air. According to published information available the AIS is 400 times more efficient than washable filters for contaminant filtration. Also the new filters will last much longer than the old paper type so they don't need replacement as often. I know this is not a popular view point with those such as ourselves who sell after market air systems, but if you can't replace it with something better don't replace it.

1. Better filtration efficiency than "Standard" cotton gauze oiled filters...sure. Better flow...no way. I have not seen a similar comparison for the "Pro Guard 7" media.

2. You need to define "Better". Better filtration efficiency...better flow...better looking...better for what situation? Better in my performance oriented mind is "increased flow with excellent filtration efficiency" (something the Pro Guard 7 media offers). Someone that is only concerned with ultimate longevity of their truck and not looking to increase performance would probably be better off with the stock setup.

Re: Air Intake?

I knew I should have kept it to myself when I posted this. I am not trying to debate the validity of after market air intakes, just simply stating that the stock unit is very good. In fact I recently changed the aFe Magnum force out of my 2001 for the AIS which is the same filter media as the stock one in the 6.0L. I am impressed, it flows great and my EGTs are slightly lower and no more washing out the filter element every 5K.

So to answer your question #2 with a question what is better about the aftermarket filter over the stock one? Does it filter contaminates more, I don't think so. Does it flow more, maybe/maybe not, but is it enough to make a real difference and what data is available to show that?

Re: Air Intake?

While we are talking air filters, how long should a stock air filter last on the 6.0L? The dash "Air Filter" light just came on on my 2003 F350. Hard to believe since I have only just over 10,000 miles of mostly city and highway driving on it.
Any guess what controls the light?

Re: Air Intake?

what contols the light are two little wires that are hooked up to your air filter guage on the box. look at your air box and see if the plunger is sucked all the way back. if it is that seems like low miles for your conditions

Re: Air Intake?

Coro,

Yes same problem here when I had only 8000 miles I changed the filter and could tell a difference in the "peppieness" of the truck. Ford and Donaldson are blowing some pretty good smoke with the filter life numbers they are claiming for the power core filters in my opinion. I have beem running the Pro Guard 7 and have found better turbo response and lower egts, maybe a tad og MPG, while saving a lot of cash on filters too. AFE has info that shows paper filter dirt stopping specifications for the Pro Guard 7 filters too, if it can't get thru paper then it's going to be well beyond good enough for my engines filtering specs.

By the way I hjave 3 Motorcraft 6.0 filters brand new in the box first $50.00 each gets all three and I'll pay the UPS, that's how strongly I feel about the Pro Guard 7 products performance. If you need the Pro Guard 7 or the Motorcrafts just call.

Re: Air Intake?

Depends on the conditions. We have a customer who uses his truck harvesting in the fields and its about as dusty as it can get all the time. He went all summer with out the filter plugging up and the Duramax under the same conditions plugged a filter every week to the point it would hardly run. It just depends.

Air Filters

Just a note that Version 1 of the 2003 "6.0 L diesel owners manual" lists the wrong air filter. It specifies the FA-1680 air filter, but that is only used for gas engines.

The correct air filter is the FA-1746, as listed in Version 2 of this manual. This version (and other ford owners manuals) are available on the web (as a PDF files).

Wonder how many other errors are in my Version 1 manual?
