I put a K&N filter on my 03 and I talked to someone the other day that told me my engine would be "dusted"(ruined) if I keep it on? could someone tell me if that is true and if so what is a better choice. I know that is probably beating a dead horse, so if someone could point me to a discussion I would be thankful.
thanks

I ran a K@N on my 97 powerstoke for 250,000 KMs. Zero problems, in fact oil analysis showed a silicon reading of 4. Silicon in the oil comes from dirt through the intake system. I currently have an AFE on my 04 powerstroke. Initial reading of silicon at 30,000 kms shows a silicon reading of 16. This is probably due to break in. My point is that the K@N system worked very well for me. I forgot to mention that I live in Sask. Canada. We are on the prairies and have a lot of dust in the air. Don't worry about your air filter. Don't clean it too much and never let it go dry, always keep it oiled.

K&N is the best for air input, because its the worst at filteration. AFE is a good balance of air/filteration.
The BEST is the OEM Donaldson Powercore. It provides the best protection, very good air input & price performance. It beats me why guys change out the OEM. If you want more performance, why run a filter at all?

For all practical purposes all 4 layer filters will pass the same amount of dirt thru to the engine. The AFE has a much higher quality of molded frame etc than others out there and seal to the majority of air boxes much better too but 4 layers of gaugze that is oiled is always going to be 4 layers of guaze. Get the AFE Pro Guard 7 system, see www.proguard7.com for specifics, it flows the air but stops the dirt. If you need an air filter lab test to show you the difference e mail me and I'll pass it on to you. If you want an AFE PG7 call us and we'll be glad to help you with questions etc.

In the order of filtering efficiency the results are:
FILTER % Efficiency
AC Delco OE 99.93%
Baldwin 99.72%
No name filter (made for gas engine, 1/3 less pleats) 99.32%
AFE ProGuard 7 (73-10062), panel filter 99.23%
WIX/Napa 99.03%
Purolator 98.73%
Amsoil, new style 98.63%
UNI 97.93%
K&N 96.80%
FLOW RESTRICTION FROM BEST TO WORST:
FILTER RESTRICTION in Inches H2O
K&N 4.54
Mystery bargain filter 4.78
AFE Pro Guard 7 Panel 4.99
Purolator 5.05
WIX/Napa 5.06
UNI 5.40
Baldwin 5.71
Amsoil 5.88
AC Delco 6.23
TOTAL DIRT PASSING THE FILTER DURING THE TEST. This is how much dirt your engine will take in if you use the filter for the duration that would cause the filter to become "dirty" enough to need replacement or cleaning. The "Dirt Passing The Filter" is the dirt collected by the "Post Filter" during the test.
FILTER DIRT IN GRAMS PASSED
AC Delco 0.4 g
Baldwin 1.1g
AFE Pro Guard 7 1.8g
Mystery Bargain 2.4g
Amsoil 2.7g
WIX/Napa 4.4g
Purolator 5.0g
K&N 6.0g
UNI 7.9g
Note: The Purolator was reported to have a seal malfunction during the test and passed more dirt than it would have with a good seal.
Interesting. SPICER
As you can see the 4 layer filters do let in a lot of dirt, you will never see the dirt in a carb or in a smooth dry intake tube, there is nothing there to colletc it. Wipe in some heavy grease and drive for 10,000 miles and then check the grease. The 7.3 has a great dirt trap at the crankcase vent just before the turbo, if you have been running a 4 layer you will have a gritty collection there.

Because of the warped housing letting more dirt in than a K&N. I have not a problem with K&N. I haved run them on my ATV's and motorcross bikes in more dirt than any truck will see and no dirt or dust in the carb.
