Upgrades and Aftermarket - 6.0L EngineUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 2003-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.0L Power Stroke engine.
I, too, have been considering a cold air intake system for my '04 F-350 6.0L. I want to allow it to breath better.
Why do you recommend the stock one up to 500 hp?
It would seem to me that a more efficient filter and a straighter pipe w/out the bellows and the various connections to cause turbulance, and an open box to make the air flow easier and smoother would be a huge advantage.

Using the data from the S&B website their filter will hold like 170 grams of dirt/dust during the ISO flow test before it reaches a point of low air flow. The OEM filter will hold 1304 grams of dirt/dust before it reaches the same point during the ISO flow test.
It isn't me trying to make a profit so read for yourself but don't let that fancy graph fool you. They fail to show the amount of dirt added to reach those points.
I'm planning on throwing an air intake and intake manifold into my '04 f350. I've been talking to a shop in Edmonton, AB, and he's pushing the S&B line, with that said the S&B intake elbow is cool as it already has ports for injection mods (meth/water, propane, etc). But my question is for the air intake itself, what is the best bang for my buck when it comes to an air intake?
thanks in advance.
Ive , found that the s&b is other than stock the best one for my 05, plus the sight glass is real pretty, pain in the ass to fit though, for me anyway

Is it just me, or is the stock air filter a PITA to replace? I think the only benefit of an aftermarket one is how easy they are to change ! Probably the only reason I got one, oh, and aso because I kicked and jumped on my stock one after one of the alignment tabs broke off while removing.

The only reason you could halfway justify going with S&B would be that you buy it and you're done, whereas with the stock unit, you have to replace it and drop anywhere from $57 (cheapest I've found) to $85 (stealership cost) each time. Of course, how long does a stock filter last? Well, my truck is an '04 and I still have the original filter on it, going on 98,000 miles. I guess if you do a lot of off-roading, replacing the OEM setup would be a PITA to your wallet, but the facts are facts....OEM is made by Donaldson, one of the leading filter manufacturers out there, and their unit flows just as good as S&B.
My opinion, stick with OEM, even though the S&B looks cooler! I think that's what bugs a lot of folks, is that the OEM setup looks restrictive, even though it's not.

the air is going into the compressor wheel turbulence don't matter much, your filter minder will let you know when you need to upgrade intakes. intakes do make the engine compartment look nice, my friend installed an xdi intake and it looks good
I can't believe this question is still coming up after all the years the 6.0 has been out.
And the answer is still the same, as seen by the majority of the answers. It's a TD truck, not your old ricer. Trust those that were smart enough to figure it out and keep the $$$ in their pockets or those that weren't and tried for them selves and spent those 100's of $$ for a lesson.

Against the advice of pretty much evryone, I used the K&N. I have to drive down 15 miles of dirt road and back everyday that I go to work. I got dang tired of buying replacement filters. The K&N is cheaper than most, been around for a while, and is available pretty much anywhere. People have stated that K&N lets dirt through but I haven't had that happen with mine. If you drive in normal conditions, stay with stock. If you like good looks and never having to replace a filter again, then change it.

If you want the best filter and want long life from your engine leave the stock filter alone. Stock filter will hold more dirt than any aftermarket filter..ya never will see a K&N or any aftermarket filter on a big rig , construction or mining rig...for a reason
