I just converted my intake system to K&N's ram air system, along with a ram air hood. Besides looking cool, it does feel a tad (just a little) stronger. But the big thing I noticed is the air inlet also makes some kind of whistle proportional to RPM. But it whsitles at a higher RPM than the turbo. So the turbo does its thing and stops whistling in the low 2000's somewhere, then I hear another whistle develop from the ram air. It is not quite as loud as the turbo, but definitely noticeable.
Anyone else know what I am talking about?

Not to get off subject but just be careful with the K&N. If you have read the air filter test report you know what I mean. Just my $0.02.
Back on track now, if I remove the front section on my factory air filter, it makes a noticeable difference in sound, both while running and during turbo spool down during shut-off.
Boy, it sure doesn't take long for the obligatory K&N bash to show up.
Anyway Ralph, I'm not entirely sure what the ram air system is but I have the generation 2 kit. Maybe the same thing, different terminology. My previous Bronco had a K&N system also and both make this noise. It is a whistle that varies with RPM.
Since I was used to hearing it on the Bronce, it didn't alarm me on this one.
My belief is that this is a "harmonic" of some sort. Since the flow of air is supposedly more "linear" and organized rather than random and "tumbling", (check your K&N documnetation for a better expanation)I think it sets up a harmonic vibration similar in principle to a real whistle. Almost like blowing air across the top of a beer bottle. In this case, higher speed air = higher frequency sound.
Thanks, at least I know it is probably supposed to do that. I like the sound!
Anyway, regarding the bashing, I took a close look at the new filter, and to a very close approximation, its design is almost the same as the AFE....same mesh, same substrate, same colors, same light oil finish. If they perform differently, it can't be by very much. The report referred to above is from quite a while ago. I remember when I first joined these boards, Mark was posting it then left and right and I bet it wasn't new at that time (and that was almost 2 years ago).....

That filter setup looks like it's a whole lot easier maintenance wise than either the Stage 1 or Stage 2 AFE filters..... Do you have to use the different hood to make it work, or will it fit under a stock hood??
Nice truck, btw!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the comments. I believe it will work without the hood, but it is obviously less restricted this way (with hood), since it has a direct set of 12" by 3" square inlet feeds pouring high velocity air right in. I did drive it for 3 miles without the hood (going from garage to body shop). Seemed to work, but I don't know. Intuition tell me its a bit better with the hood. Probably not worth the extra money, but I like the look.

Its the same FIRK K&N kit we use. Nice kit and looks impressive too.
Regarding filter media, lots of BS out there with NO controlled testing to back up the negitive claims. I doubt anyone has tested more media than K&N. In fact, looking real close the media looks the same in 99% of the filters. Some are different colors but no real benefits from what we can tell.

DUDE!!! That is THE hood that I have been wanting for my truck! No kidding! I noticed it first in the July 2003 issue of Four Wheeler magazine in the "Out of Hand" Super Duty article on page 62. I even laminated the pic for my Dream Wall. I just don't know about the Ram Air portion. Kinda worried about snow or H20 injestion.
One thing for certain, that thing looks !
Are you going to think that I am just trying to keep up with "the Jones" if I get one too?!?

Looks sweet! Do you think there will be any problems driving in heavy rain?
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think rain is a problem. The last 4 days in central NJ, it has been raining....sometimes pretty hard. No problem, seems fine. I thought the stock one could also admit water in a hard, driving rain. Especially if you have the zoodad mod. None of those guys have had a problem. Anyway, not an issue, and runs great.
Thanks fo the comments.....just enjoying the view for now....

Thanks. No, it's ok for you to get one...you're all the way in TN! You'll love it. You have to get it color matched at a body shop, that's all. Also, the stock hinges will probably have to be adjusted to get a nice fit.
Next time it is sunny, I will clean her up and get a few outdoor shots.
