My truck has been flawless except for rough idle. I have 9000 miles and thinking about putting in a performance chip. Has anyone done this? Any problems? What chip did you use? Thanks
I haven't done mine, but will consider it later. The 6.0l doesn't use "chips" as the older Fords did. With the 6.0l you have to add a "box" which connects between the PCM and FICM. These all intercept the CAN bus signals sent from the PCM to the FICM that control injection timing and duration and change them to better values when they can (they probably leave idle values alone for instance). Some boxes only connect between the PCM and the FICM, but some connect to the MAP sensor also.
Several companies are now making boxes. A lot of people on here use and are happy with the Quadzilla box. Edge Products has just released a new box that's a least $100 less and they have torque curves on their web site that go to a bit lower rpm than the Quadzilla site. TS performance has one, but I've not heard any reports about theirs. And, there is a product out there called a "volumizer", but I can't remember who makes it.

Superchips will have their MicroTuner available for the 6.0L in September. Their programmer plugs into the diagnostic port and basically saves the stock program and then installs one of the new program (your choice between 2 or 3 levels). Nothing is left connected to the truck and you can revert back to stock quickly and easily. Additionally their programmer is a code reader. AND when you put the stock program back in, all codes are cleared.
I've used the SCMT previously with total satisfaction, so thats the one Im holding out for.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get to the point of "chipping" my future truck, but a feature I AM interested in is saving off the original programming. With all the problems that people have had due to bad reflashes, the ability to save off the original programming is a very attractive feature to have!
Please keep up posted with this up and coming product!
The way it works is the programmer saves the stock program and replaces it with one of the performance programs. While the programmer has the stock program in it, it is locked.. This is the method of keeping people from buying one programmer and using it on all their buddies trucks.
Back to your point: The programmer cannot hold the stock program AND leave the truck with the stock program too. You have to replace the performance program with the stock program at which time the programmer will not hold that stock program anymore and you can then use the programmer on another truck.

I bet that if you talked to Superchips about your intention, they have the ability to do what you want though.....

We have the Edge Juice box which uses a 3 position switch to choose 50, 75 or 100rwhp. I don't have a 6.0L so I can't tell you first hand how it works, but we have seen excellent results with all of the Edge products. Regardless of what box you choose, you will still need the gauges and exhaust to work with the box and keep EGTs under control.

When you remove the Edge or quadzilla or whatever module, does it clear the computer? The reason I ask is because if you remove the box Im concerned that there will be a record of the boosted fuel and/or turbo pressures. If you take your truck to the shop, they will see this and can void your warranty.

I have the new edge box on my truck and am totally impressed. Just got back from a 2,500 mile trip pulling a 10k race car trailer and pulled it through the smokey mountains and back. Used tow/haul mode and cruise control the whole trip. Here is what I found..
NEVER shifts down even on the 6% 3mile long grades, cruise set at 78 mph, pulls down just two mph and then back to 78 all the way over the top. Exh temp 1200 max, turbo 28psi max. This box makes the 6.0 the PERFECT towing machine in my opinion. I used the 70hp middle setting. Raised mpg 1.5 over stock as well. Tranny temp max 190 in 99 to 105 degree temps (yes 105.....hot as hell)
Truck runs smoothly in all modes and is a real pleasure to drive.
LOVE IT!!

When you take out the performance program or remove a module, it is true that you can erase the codes. But, they will scramble the pcm i.d. number. When a Ford tech looks at it instead of showing the id number it will show weird Chinese like charaters on the WDS. So there is no way to get away with it unless you know a ford tech that can reflash the PCM.
I've read some mention here about new products for the 6.0l, namely one with programmable limiters and some sort of gauges, triple programs, etc. I haven't seen any updates on your web site. Any updated on-line info for us? I'm around six months off from my new ride (financial, not engine fear reasons. ) and hope to have one of your green boxes. Just interested in keeping up with developments....

Smokn, I dont deny that any of these products will make the truck much better, but Im just worried about detection.
I know that with the microtuner, the only code that shows after reverting back to stock is one that says somthing about not enough input to give any codes (same as if you disconnect the batteries for 15 minutes to reset the comp.)
So will disconnecting the batteries for 15 minutes erase the High boost and fuel level histories after removing the quadzilla or other box?

I linked that thread because it pertains directly to the original post. Customer towed a big load through the hills, got great mileage, had no egt problems, and is happy.
Now to answer the other question. I cannot 100% tell you that there is or isn't fuel and boost tables that are kept in memory. The reason, is with a WDS or any other tool we use, we have never seen these. I have spent many hours with a WDS, especially since I have a truck that rough idles. I have done everything myself and the tech from the biggest Ford dealer in our area, can do to find things. I still can't say that you are wrong, or right? I would have to have someone show me these tables. I can tell you that it would be a one and a million tech to have any clue what he was looking for or what he found.
If you know a way that someone can show me these tables I would gladly get in touch with them. I personally would like to see them.
We have a tremendous amount of modules in use. I just can't imagine, that if this is true, and all the problems Ford is having, it hasn't come up? Surely our customers aren't the only ones that Don't have trouble? Surely our customers are removing there modules and taking them in for service? I would certainly think that if Ford can find these we would have had some troubles?
The ECM's are totally different than the 7.3's. The codes set differently it is just different all together, so to try and compare a programmer to this would be tough.
So I am still going to stand on the premise that our modules can't be traced. If someone would like to show me otherwise, I will stand corrected, then fix it!
Hope that answered the question? If not let me know and I will try again.
