ARP Studs - Questions

As a newbie to Diesels, I am unfamiliar with the advantages of ARP Studs. If I have these installed on my PSD 6.0, I have a few questions...

1. what can I do that I couldn't do before?
2. What should I not do?
3. What are the odds of blowing the head gaskets with studs installed?

Thanks!

John

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

The OEM bolts are torque to spec and prone to stretch enough to let the heads lift in some cases. The ARP studs greatly minimize that chance. That's all they do.

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

FamilyRide said what the studs them selves do as compared to the OEM bolts.

To answer your questions:

1. You can go well above the 425-450HP limit that the stock head studs tend to have.

2. If you are going to stay stock, or not push a high power program, you might not want to worry about studs unless you blow them. If you do blow your headgaskets stock or under a low-power program, you might have warped heads.

3. The odds of blowing a head gasket with studs installed is low...unless you have warped heads, in which case you could blow them again.

In all honesty, I wouldn't spend money on these unless you prove to have a need for them. Your engine should NOT need them if you are running stock programming, for the most part.

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

If I can blow my head gaskets stock at 18k miles, anyone can. If it was caused by warped heads, then anyone can get warped heads as mine were straight when the gaskets were replaced.

Let me answer your questions:

1-Run lots of power reliably
2-Put stock TTY bots back on.
3-Unlikely unless the dealer has no idea what they are doing or you decide to run boost pressures higher than 50psi.

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

Thanks, guys, for the helpful information. Guess if I find out next week if the head gasket(s) blew, I'll order the ARP studs and have them installed.

Is there a better set of head gaskets that should be used as well? Will the OEM gaskets be okay with the ARP studs? I mean, I know they will work, but is there something better? Do it once, not twice...

Thanks again.

Hey John, are you saying that you do have a problem and that next week you might find out you need HG? If so, give us more info about what is happening...

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

There are a higher tensile strength stud from Elite called H-11's. Arp's are around 240,000 psi and H-11's are around 270,000psi tensile strengths. Do you need the higher for your application? No you do not. The H-11's are also about $220.00 more than the ARP's. I believe the stock bolts are around 165,000 if I remember correctly. I could be off some but it's pretty close for SOME info.

Make sure the dealer is willing to install the studs before you go spending that kind of money.

AFA headgaskets go, the stock gaskets are fine for stock and more than mild applications. If you are building a sled puller or race truck then I would suggest other gaskets.

Smiley, I pull a 11K pound 5er up and down passes like Raton. I need something that won't blow (again?) and is reliable. Can you recommend a brand of gaskets?

Bogg, I have pretty well laid it out in a couple of posts within this thread. Right now, without the 5er hooked up, I get the hissing sound if I really romp on it (stock tune). Noise comes from drivers side, probably the gasser bottle, but not sure. Seems to turn on and off. I cleaned off the white mess on the underside of the hood above gasser and will see if it pukes any more before I have the mechanic looking at it on Monday (soonest I could get in).

Gaskets are not the issue here, although they did upgrade them. Its the poor quality head bolts that stretch and alow gasses to seep out causing erosion of the gaskets themselves. ARP studs will solve this even with an 11k lb trailer.

If you want to go crazy, get fire ring gaskets. They are expensive and require machining of the heads. If you are only looking to go mildly overboard, there are wire ring gaskets, however, their site recommends the Ford stock head bolts only be used (I have no idea why...)

The stock gaskets and ARP's will hold extremely well if your diesel tech is compitent by checking flatness and performing a proper install.

Good luck.

Again, my apologies.

Re: ARP Studs - Questions

OK, Ford just put new heads and gaskets on my truck. I was running an extreme tune when they went. I am going to install ARP studs myself. The truck smoked a lot with this tune. I was thinking that I may be able to bring the boost up 15% and bring the fuel up 5% which will clean up some smoke and give me more power. Can I do this with studs? What do the tuners do different if you have studs and you are looking for more power.
