Back Pressure Sensor

I own a 04 Excursion and have had the sensor changed out four times now. First two by dealership. After second one went out, I straight piped from manifold doing away with CAT and muffler. Changed the sensor out two more times and still no luck. Now the dealership is telling me its because of the straight pipe and this sensor needs back pressure to operate. How can this be, with all the after market cat and muffler delete options there are. Would a programmer fix this problem?

Depending on your strategy, the dealership can reflashe your truck to eliminate the sensor. I'd have them do that, if possible. The EBP can easily become corroded and it will skew the readings.

It sounds like the dealership may be treating the symptom and not the cause.... One would first need to know if this is an early build or a late build...

Mention has been made of the EBP delete strategy that is part of the programming for early builds.... This isn't the best program in the world and I would have liked to see this issue handled differently. FWIW, this was FSA (recall) 06E17.

Now, the big question... how is the EBP sensor failing? This could be an important clue as to why it keeps failing... Additionally, if yours is an early build, there would be neither the need nor a purpose for replacing the sensor...

Lastly, we (at the dealership) don't really get any say as to what program will be installed at the time of a reflash.... rest assured it will be the "latest and greatest" but it will also be the appropriate programming as decided by the scan tool... Someone with a little knowledge of the system can "force feed" a different strategy but this could be counterproductive.

Can anyone tell me what the EBP actually does for the engine? Is it there for emissions or what?

The EBP sensor measures backpressure pre turbo and is used mainly for controlling the vanes on the turbo. With the later reflashes, the EBP sensor was eliminated as an input and backpressure is calculated.
