bad converter

how do you know before a converter goes out? Any symptoms? Noises? Shaking? Vibrating? Just wondering im about to have to rebuild my tranny, and im pretty sure im gonna get a converter just not sure of what one. Its gonna be a while. But ive also heard that a lot of tranny failures are due to bad converters. Just wondering if there are any signs of weakness before it goes. Thanks!

Re: bad converter

Before mine went out, it felt like it slipped into neutral while driving for 5-10 seconds, then grabbed again. Next day it was gone. Had to rev 3000 plus RPM to get it to the side. LS

Re: bad converter

The only symptoms of a bad convertor I have seen are eratic lockup operation [or no lockup] or just no drive period. Also front pump seal leaks can be traced to a worn convertor hub and bushings.

Re: bad converter

Mine made a knocking noise much like a cracked flex plate would, but ford swore up and down it was the converter. Paper work said removed and replaced converter. The bill totaled to about 800.00

BTW it was my fault the converter went / forgot to put in towhaul mode noticed it at about 150 mi later. About a week later it started to knock.
