I did my research and had it confirmed today buy The Truck Stop. I am installing a K&N 63 series that will replace my horrble Visteon intake. The guy I talked to has same truck as me and says his works great plus adds 2 to 3 mpg. Hope I helped some.

"Best" how?

Best "filter" is a plank in front of the turbo.

Best "flow" is nothing in front of the turbo.

How to balance between the two & factor in cost is what engineers get the big bucks for and then the accountants tell them whether the company can afford it.

Until you stick bigger injectors and a different turbo on it, the stock Donaldson "intake" is the best balance of price, performance, and protection available. If you need more flow, you will loose protection. How much that matters to you is up to you.

I was wondering if anyone has any input on the true flow XDI air filter. I wanted to upgrade my intake also, but want to keep good filtration. I understand stock is best filtration but i want more performance too. The XDI is different in my research to the other filters since it uses foam type filter with a tacky oil. Same type of filter I had on all my motocross bikes. I figured if it works for dirt bikes, should be good for our trucks. however it's hard to find facts on this since it's a newer product.

where i live the conditions aren't too harsh so protection isn't a factor... just as long as i'm not running straight air..
and it's 4x2 so it's not like it's going to be seeing any mud/sand/dirt etc..
i want the most air-flow.. period... and i know all about bigger injectors and turbo.. they will come later..
this is for mostly for MPG purposes because it has seen a lot of highway and will see tons more..

I have found the xdi for 299 on ebay new +15 S/H. and 339 on extrmedieselperformance.com free shipping. Other then that I have been seeing AFE with progaurd 7 alot. It's 275 on extremedieselperformance.com best price I can find again. Those are the 2 that I think im toying with. My only reservation is the light oil type filters seem to suck the oil up into the turbo and gunk it up.

ya, about the oil getting in the turbo; that's why i was leaning towards s&b because they have somehow "formulated their design" (supposably) to keep oil from getting sucked into the turbo AND helps prevent the oil from messing with ur mass air sensor..
this is what i watched... truthaboutfilters

The S&B is also a significant amt. cheaper than most...... but i go by what u pay for is what u get...
but they actually go into detail about their filters unlike others.. Only experience i have with kits are K&N (and are good.. i could take it or leave it) but that was on gas and was wondering what was best for diesel

I've never seen any test numbers from K&N or XDI which is why I avoided them. You'll like the S&B. It's a very large filter and the whole setup looks impressive under the hood. It filters negligibly less than stock but flows quite a bit more.

That is exactly what i thought.. sacrificing a little bit of filtration but you can't argue with the added flow.. and the price isn't bad...
thanks!!

PS- i noticed you have a zoodad mod.... is it worth the time? and i have no clue as to what it is except that it just seems like you make a hole in ur truck......

Noffense but been there tried that. ain't gonna happen. save your money sell the Banks and get an SCT X3 with custom tunes and keep the Donaldson filter. If you want something worth while under the hood put in a regulated return fuel system.

has anybody here actually done research on how much our engines (i.e. 7.3 or 6.0) need as in air flow. from my understanding you would need to do some OUT ragous mods to actually need more air flow then what stock delivers. and have you looked at how awful the filtering is on the k&n type filters. just my 2 cents but i think it is more then likely a waste of money. not to mention letting more junk in to your trucks engine.

correction, when i got down there the guy was pretty cool and informed me that he had ordered a Volant for another customer but never showed. Long story short, I went with the Volant for the same price as the K&N. Which he explained how it was better on performance and better for the turbo than K&N, which people buy because of the name. Not to mention I saved about 75$ that the Volant would have costed.
I have a Visteon intake for sale if your interested. Its not cold air but it is big as hell and will keep some flow and protect your turbo. PM me if interested.
