hey guys,
i'll be putting a turbo-back exhaust system on my X and want to install a thermocouple for pyrometer...is there a preferred location and any tricks from experience to make it easier...
thanks,
wiliam
Driver's side exhaust manifold, near the last cylinder. It's real easy to reach, drill and tap. I think this is the most common location and it's pre-turbo, so you will get more accurate readings from there.

And in my tradition, I have to also mention the clamp on style in the up-pipe as mine is done.

[/ QUOTE ] This is where I mounted mine and I have noticed that letting the truck cool below 350 takes a while several minutes of idleing and to me it seems to rise and fall very quickly from 1000 to 450 in about 20 or so seconds is this normal?

hey guys,
you're talking like you drilled and tapped for the thermocouple with the ex. manifold on the truck...i'm too afraid of metal shavings going through the turbo if i left the manifold on....can you be a little more specific...

Yes, on the truck. Start with a very small pilot drill and slowly go up in drill sizes. After each drill bit size is used, stick a shop-vac hose over the hole to collect any shavings.
There are many guys here and do the above without the shop vac with no problems with shavings. Using the different size drill bits ensures that the shavings are small enough to pass through the turbo.

That is how I did mine. I did keep the vacuum running and next to the drill bit when I was making the hole.

I did the drill and tap but what I did was use a large magnet to collect the shavings before they fell in my face then I ran the magnet up and down the mainifold to pull all the shavings out. It worked really well for me.

This worked for me as well. 1st time it's fired up after the install, don't touch the throttle for a couple of minutes to let any fine shavings you didn't get with the vacuum get through the turbo at it's lowest speed.

i've been told to keep grease on the drill bit also...i'll use all three tricks and that shouldn't let a thing through...
thanks guys,
william
[/ QUOTE ] Don't use grease It will cause the shavings to stick and they may stick in the manifold, I don't know who told you to use grease but I think they were wrong. All the directions I have read mention "not" to use grease.
