Upgrades and Aftermarket - 6.0L EngineUpgrading and adding aftermarket equipment to your 2003-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.0L Power Stroke engine.
i've been looking into starting to modify my 05 excursion and from what i've read all the high horsepower guys are running bypass filtration systems. my question is what is it? it seems to be counter productive to me dont you want your oil filtered? i've noticed companys claim to reduce soot by doing this. is this a good idea?
Basically, bypass oil filtration is another filter with a much smaller micron rating. Mine filters to 2 microns. Standard oil filters can only filter to about 6 microns, and (according to the mfgs) the real engine wear is caused by the much smaller micron particles of contaminate.
So, you still run the "standard" or OEM filter, and you add another filter body and cartridge which constantly filters out the smaller particles. It keeps the oil much much much more cleaner.
the reason the stock oil filter cannot filter down to that level is that you lose flow. Hence, the "bypass".....some oil bypasses the secondary filter because it is filtering the oil down to the 2 microns.
I average 8500 miles on my dino oil (delo400). I pull a sample at 5000 and send it to blackstone. The tell me how my engine and oil are doing. They tell me (recommend) how much longer to run the oil.
my $.02 is that it is one of the best investments you can make if you want to put alot of miles on your truck......
hope that helps.

do the math: Bypass filter $240; average oil change $105. You run amsoil and bypass filter you can run 25k miles on oil not 3500miles. After bypass unit is installed you get superior wear protection and you start to save money after 3500 miles.

You're making a huge assumption that the oil can do 25K.

Fleet guys do this all the time, they have places that will analyze oil samples and let you know how the sheer is doing, any contaminants, etc...
I've seen the ams oil filter in action, on a mustang, guy had like 20,000 miles on the oil, it looked brand new out of the bottle and he had his oil sheet to prove everything is ok...
I was amazed..

Let us know when you get 20-25K on your oil with the Powerstroke with HEIU injectors. And then I'll be amazed too.
And read the other print about may or may not last longer than one year. I don't put 25K miles on my vehicles per year, so I would have to change before the 25K anyways.
And one concern I've had about oil analysis is what if a filter filters the engine wear out of the oil. Will engine wear show up in UOA?

I run 10-11K changes on my 6.0 w/ the FS-2500. NEVER any longer regardless of what blackstone says. At the end of the change interval it gets noticeably louder and rough running. You are running a 12-15000$ motor, taking chances to save a couple bucks is insane.
7.3 yes no problem
Big rig yes
heavy equipment yes

I'm not expert by any means...but logic tells me engine wear would should up as metal shavings or increase amount of metal content in the oil? thats about all I can think of...

Actually the link above actually explains in all in good detail...very interesting..

You folks who are against oil bypass and longer drain intervals using a quality oil, go ahead and continue to spend your money on oil and more down time due to frequent service. I personally know several powerstroke and dodge folks running bypass with quality oil. They average 20k miles on their oil and use their truck to pull, daily. One dodge friend of mine has 300k miles on his truck and nothing has been touched on the motor!!!!!!!
