Can the Head Studs be Installed without pulling the Engine??

I have a friend that is looking at buying a 6.0 and he was wondering if the Head Studs can be installed one at a time with the engine in the truck.

Thanks for the help...

You mean replace the OEM bolts with studs, one at a time? If so, there's a couple people here who've done it.

Either cab off, or heads off. Possibly with the heater core/ac condensor out. Other than that no.

Please elaborate. I have asked how, many, many times and no one has come forward to explain. They always say the heads have to be removed or the cab. I want to know how if it can be done with the heads on and cab on.
Thanks

Correct. My truck had headgaskets and studs put in without removing the cab. So did this guy:

.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45285&highlight=studding+my+dads

(Just put in the diesel garage before the dot com)

If you want to do 1 for 1 you will have to pull the cab. If not you will have to replace headgaskets since you will be removing the heads in order to remove the rear passenger bolts, IIRC.

Re: Can the Head Studs be Installed without pulling the Engine??

I just said its not easy. How the hell is that telling the whole thread it cant be done?

You have to remove ALOT more to do it with the cab on. Read that thread from diesel garage ^.

We pulled the cab on my 6.0, and it just makes it much easier if you have the resources.

Re: Can the Head Studs be Installed without pulling the Engine??

The original question is can they be changed one at a time cab on? NO

The bolts will not clear firewall on back lower corners and I think the back uppers too. Go look at the driver's side rear bottom bolt.

YES the heads can be removed with bolts held by rubber bands as heads are slid out and the heads with studs can be re-installed the same way and studs threaded in with heads in place. If you are doing head gaskets with cab on the bolts have to be retained in heads in order for them to be slid into place. Conceivably you could remove evap case and drill a few holes with a hole saw and change bolts and seal holes with rubber plugs. Anything is possible if you want it bad enough. The results may not be pretty....

I have not done this myself but a friend is a ford tech told me about the pains of this task and I visited him one day when they were doing cab off gaskets. He pointed out the trouble areas. Looking at my trucks, those rear bolts' clearance problem is obvious. Lower bolts are 6 inches or maybe more. There is not that kind of room to get them out with heads in place.

Re: Can the Head Studs be Installed without pulling the Engine??

If you want to put studs, its best that you go ahead and remove the heads inspect the pistons and cyl walls, install a new head gasket all at the same time. You have nothing to loose. By removing the cab its much easier and quicker to do. At that point you can choose to work on the EGR and rear fuel ports for more modifictaions.
