Cat delete or muffler delete?

I'm picking up my 05 in a couple of weeks and wondering what route I should go. I know a full exhaust would be better, but for now this will have to do. My dealer has ok'd the removal of the CAT. What would lower egts more and what would sound better. I don't want to do both, because I will be towing and don't want it to be excessively loud. I can handle some extra noise, I just don't need it roaring inside the cab on the 6-8 hour trips. Oh yeah once I get a few miles on it I will be running an SCT.

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

Everybody I have talked to says the factory muffler is the restrictive part of the system. I would get rid of it first. Then later I would do away with the cat and put a 4 or 5" baffled muffler on it. I have a baffled Bully Dog 4" and no cat and it is hardly any louder than stock.

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

No big change for me with the cat delete...but the muffler is very restrictive.

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

Will it be annoyingly loud while towing with no muffler? Don't get me wrong I love the sound of a straight piped diesel, but not for hours on end when towing.

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

I'll admit it gets noisy on the interstate going the interstate speeds, even worse towing at 70+ mph. If you want less noise just go with an aftermarket free(er) flowimg muffler from Banks or Magnaflow or any of the diesel sponsors.

It sure turns heads though!!!!

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

I am running a muffler delete pipe from ITP Diesel. The truck sounds great. Rumbles a little when you get on it. Slight drone at around 1500 rpm only noticeable at speeds 25-35mph. My Dealer stated that cat removal would be in violation of Federal emission law and would void warranty.-FYI

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

Personally, I would not remove anything till you get a few thousand miles under your belt, like 10,000---15,000.

It's your truck, just my.02

Re: Cat delete or muffler delete?

4" turbo back and I kept the cat and use the Borla muffler. High whistle is nice. Muffler sound is low...very happy am I. Very quick off the line. With this and the K&N cold air I am seeing 1 mpg improvement for city and 2 mpg towing at 75 mph pulling 8,000" trailer...got 12 mpg solid on a 1200 mile run last weekend...seems like the sweet spot is 2300 on the tach...
