CAT OR NO CAT?

My friend just got a new 04 6.0 and wants me to get him an exhaust system. He loves the sound of mine (Larger DP, stock Cat then 4 inch back to 3 inch dualls) It is not that loude but i love the tone of it and so does he, he wants to know will he gain much more if he goes straight through? and if he does will it have the rumbel mind does at about 2500 rpm? or just turbo wine all the way through the RPM range?.
thanks for your Help

Keep it, you won't gain a thing other than turbo whistle.

Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

WARRANTY?? lots of dealers will void your warranty if you remove the cat. It also has a very anoying hissing sound to it at idle. Just the hassle with the warranty convinced me to just cut the muffler and call it good.

cheers

The cat is easy enough to replace that it isn't an issue. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to put back in place if waranty work is needed.

Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

Cat or no Cat,

NO CAT...come on...the whistle is the best part. People hear the truck start up and it whistles, they begin to laugh and then you pull away and it sounds as if the world is coming to an end. You will have more heads turning to see what the heck is coming their way.

As for Warranty issues, take a case of beer with you to the dealer and get a feel for how tough they will be inforcing the warranty issues. Mine could care less, in fact they have been lately advising me on which upgrades to get.

The one benefit you will get from the straight pipe, besides the mean growl sound is that your turbo will spool up faster than it did stock.

I hope you make the right choice!

Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

Its not the dealership you have to worry about as far as warranty issues are concerned. Its the Ford Reps that get called in when the dealership is stumped on a repair. It is then that most people are seeing their warranty claims vaporize into thin air.

Hey, its a semi-free country so do as you like, just make sure you go in with eyes wide open. Then take your lumps like the rest of us.

Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

If you want the most flow possible then the cat has to go. Leaving the cat in place does nothing to help the motor. In fact over time the cat will build up with soot and the performance will get even worse. Especially when running a module which results in even more black smoke running through the exhaust. Oh yes, and the sound, it is beautiful with a true straight-pipe. Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

I have the HOG 4" exhaust with no cat and the quieter muffler. To me this is a great combo! I have the later '04 turbo so the whistle is not excessive, but you do hear it at all speeds. The rumble is there at 60-75mph but not too loud. When you stand on it, nothing I have owned sounds as awsome!!!!!! Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

just had to add this,I had the 4 inch bullydog alum system with the cat in place but knocked out the guts in the cat with a pipe and it had more turbo whislte then any other pickup that i have heard. long story made short I bent up the exhust doing some rough stuff and after hearing all the raves about the MBPR exhuast I ordered the turbo back stainless with the cat delete pipe and have to say I am not impressed at all,my truck sounded alot better, alot deeper and more turbo whistle with the bully dog and hollow cat.I am going to put the hollow cat back on and see if it changes anything but I feel the hollow cat acted as a expansion chamber and amplified the sound.but again this is just my thoughts and everyone has there own tastes.one more note,I put the new muffler on as shown in the directions, does it sound any better or differnt if you reverse it?

Jared

Re: CAT OR NO CAT?

i am obviously voting no cat. the whistle is there for everything until you really get on it. then that big block v8 rumble comes alive.

suggestion: if you go w/ a 3.5" down pipe, get the "cat test pipe" from Ford and it would be a totally simple bolt on to add or remove the cat and it should mate up to the exhaust just the same if you planned on leaving the cat in the first place.
