I've been seeing alot of interest in the SCT. However, I'm not sure what the difference is over SC, Edge, Quad, etc? What makes one dealers custom tune better than the other? If I call a SCT dealer I have no idea what to ask for
I could tell you all about why the SCT is better and so on. But rather than be a salesman I will let everyone else reply. Then after you have heard what they have to say, ask me some questions and I will answer them.

The SCT programming software used by the dealers, very similar to the Racer package offered by SCT, allows dealers or self tuners to change parameters related to engine and transmission performance. SCT engineers reverse engineer and document the various automotive manufacturers processors and pull out the information that is pertinent to tuning. The more acccess you have to these parameters, the more complete you can make the tune.
You will get similar programming between the various SCT dealers. SCT developed the programs for the dealers to use and they share as much information as possible. SCT is huge in the Ford performance industry and will be expanding to the other major American car manufacturers in the near future.
Just wanted to give you a little background information. Like Tadd said, the best information is from those who use the tunes.

How do you know then who has the better program? You both seem to have good reputations here. I think that is what he is asking is how do you know you have a good program? I want to just have a nice towing program that gives you the extra hp and torque without having to worry about pyro gauges. I also want the tranny protected.
I am sure both Tadd and Innovative are great but I can personally vouch for Tadds. Awesome all the way around...
Exactly. So Tadd and Eric you both offer custom tunes and both of you have good reps on this forum I'm not a racer so maybe the SCT isn't right for me, I guess this is my question?
Is the SCT for those that like or have the know how to re-program the engine parameters?
It seems to me that the SCT is the only way to get a tranny program to support the higher HP and Torque?
I guess I'd like the tranny to shift better and gain a little more off the line?

Not all SCT dealers do diesel tuning. Most dealers are specific to a particular industry. As far as diesel tuning on stock trucks, you will get a similar powerful, yet safe tune no matter where you go. It wouldn't be good for SCT or the tuning business for one dealer to tune much differently than another. There is only one way to tune, that is the proper way. The key to custom tuning is safety first, performance second. SCT keeps it's name in the industry due to tuning the proper way...programming like Ford intended. No cheating, tricking, begging or bartering for more power out of the processor. This goes for gasser tuning also.

No, SCT isn't the only way to go if you want the tranny control module tuned also. Superchips 1704 does as well. However, SC 1704 is an off the shelf tuner that cannot be custom tuned. I think most people would describe it as more conservative than the SCT base tunes, at least according to feedback here, although I don't know first hand. The SCT custom tunes would/could be anything incldung even more conservative if you wanted, however I dont' think that's what most go with a SCT for, regardless of who the SCT tuner/dealer is.
If you don't have any specific requirments, needs or wants, the SC 1704 might be the trick. Otherwise, if you have specific needs/wants for example, specific shift points or power manipulatioon for towing, SCT would be the way to go.

Familyride is right, you can get a a Superchip microtuner as a good alternative. The one thing about the SCT is that the dealers can custom tune and I have a specific file that I have designed to produce good towing torque. One way to determine is buy the SCT and if you are not happy I will give you up to 30 days to return it for a full refund. I also some Superchips Microtuners on special right now.

Thanks FamilyRide, I'm starting to get it now. I'm a little dense I guess.
The only thing with the SC1704 is it doesn't allow you to program taller tires, which seems important somehow?
Do the SCT programs consider tires size and gearing into their programming, I guess this would be a custom tune then
Geez, there's just too many choices and things to consider

I looking hard at the SCT and would need one with two programs, one for towing and one for hauling butt. Is this normal for SCT? What tunes do I look for?

The higher HP/TQ tune will allow you to pull up to 10k lbs with no problem. As always, we recommend a pyro to keep an eye on things. The tow tune will allow you to pull just about whatever you want. We include three tunes with our SCT flashers.
