Question cost to stud my truck

I'm wondering what the aprox. cost would be to do the head studs privately?(hire diesel mechanic on the side $20/hr)
ARP Studs are $400, gaskets $170/side?, labor time? other parts? I have a guy that can do the head work if needed.
I just did the uppipe to bypass the EGR cooler and am running SCT tunner with Erics extreme street. Still pukes after the bypass
(must be the head gasket) So I'm looking for some insight as too how much I need to save to do the studs the right way, I've oviously modified the truck and not interested in working on my truck. While the heads are off I would also like to do the coolant circ line mod from Elite. Just looking to help bullet proof the truck. Anyone have any idea on the cost involved for a project like this? Thanks in advance

I can't resist this and it will likely be my downfall... Hire a diesel mechanic on the side? The underground economy is alive and well - I'm not fraudulent... I just want everyone else to pay taxes - not me....

Hire a diesel mechanic for $20 per hour.... Hey, sailor... wanna get lucky? Hey... buddy.. come work in my driveway for less than you get at work... I offered a plumber $40 per hour cash no receipt - he laughed at me.... probably a good thing since he wouldn't have to warranty his work.... "My repair was bad???? Show me the receipt".

Hire a diesel tech for $20/hour? I can't imagine that this guy would be very good if he will work for donuts...

Yes... I'm a dork.... the price will vary from one shill to the next... one thing we are assured of... there is NO honesty among thieves.

I gave a constructive opinion... of a sorts.

The OP opines that he can hire a diesel tech for cheap... I agree.... however, I wouldn't want a cheap tech working on my stuff.... Common sense has to kick in somewhere along the process.

On TDS, one of the big complaints is "inadequate techs"... inadequate techs come cheap.

A poster opines that he can find himself an inadequate tech and have inadequate work done. He will surely have an opinion about his experience.

He will be allowed his opinion.... However.... hen someone with experience offers an opinion, the idea that expertise may come with a price becomes "foreign"

FWIW... I know a lot of people with tool boxes.. I wont hire them... neither should you. Get my drift?

$20 per hour? i know where you can find a guy named Hector who will put those head studs in for you real cheap and do your yard work too.
just pick him up from 7-11 and bring your translator. $20 will also buy you 5 minutes of a licensed master plumber after your initial service call.
good luck. i would say it would take 20 to 25 hours of shop time looking at my recent bill of 6k from ford which included other things besides the head gaskets and studs.

I think it would be about 2 grand labor to do it right. You should pull the cab off and have the heads checked. There are probably specialized tools required as well. I had Ford do mine. The tech did the STC ftg update and gave me a new HPOP while he was in there. He knew what the was doing nad got me taken care of while he was in there for warranty.

Thanks guys! Good info to help me decide the best options... I'm considering having Elite Diesel do the work, I want it done right the first time, and it makes sence to use someone with experience of what works for these moderately modified 6.0's
Anyone had Elite work on there truck? Feedback welcome :-)

First off your NOT A DORK...and yes the "underground" economy is alive and well. I have wrenched "on the side" for many, many moons. I have been told for years that I "don't charge enough". I Was able to pay for my son to be in a private boarding school in Missouri for 3 yrs. while he learned self control and without my "underground" work I wouldn't have been able to, on my State worker salary. I still do lots of work and I am still undercharging ( some say way too much!) but at this stage of my life it is not my bread and butter. A lot of my "customers" are state workers who can't afford the "regular" rates of the dealer and shops...Don't even get me started on the dishonesty and shoddy work done by these guys. I take PRIDE in my work and it shows by the referalls I get all the time. I am not trying to Flame any one here but I will maintain that when you do GOOD work at a GOOD price, you will be busy. Yes a head stud replacement is a big job and I for one wouldn't hesitate to take it on. FWIW...I have always charged by the "job" not the hr. too much room for dishonesty,

OKAY I am done ranting....

um... just got my done by a ford dealer for a $100 bucks...

Just do what I did... I guess it was the best idea.. load the tunes and hual a load and wait for em to go... you'll know when they do. Then take it to the dealer and get them to place the new studs in. My dealer actually recommended them to me and the mech. wrote his info on the back of the print out for ARP's lol

Furthermore, nothing beats having a great mech. that loves aftermarket stuff. Finding them is the hard part. Took me a year or so. But he does 6-7 head studs changes a week. No lie. everytime I went in there he had about 4-5 truck in a CIRCLE around his Chest.... lol Now not all had studs going in them, but there were always 2 on a lift that were doing that.

Alex

For Pete's sake...What kind of person accuses someone he doesn't even know of being an inadequate, incompetent, cheap, dishonest, undergroud tax fraud and theif?

It's ignorant to judge a guy's work by what he charges. The OP doesn't have to pay rip-off prices at a Ford dealer to receive honest, fair, competent service. In my opinion some of the most expensive incompetent work comes from Ford dealerships. There are shops that will do a better job for less money. And more power to the OP if he has one. I do a lot of work for free, mostly for friends and those in need. And I do a better job than any Ford tech I know.

Let's not forget that the guy working for twenty dollars an hour is probably putting nearly the same amount of money in his pocket at the end of the day as a Ford tech. Private on the side doesn't have all the expenses of a shop. If he is using his home garage and his regular common tools, it's pretty cheap to conduct business. Not to mention he probably isn't paying any tax, garage keepers or liability insurance, and doesn't have to wear a uniform. On top of that there is no one answering the phones or filling out a schedule for his work that needs to make a wage off his work.

Price is all relative. It's only the end product that has value.
