Do the 60's need backpressure?

I was thinking of cutting off my stock muffler and and clamping a piece of pipe in its place on my 6.0 until I can get a new exhaust. My question is would doing this be bad for the engine? Doesn't the engine require some backpressure? My girlsfriend's 05 cummins with the straight pipe from turbo back actually feels like it lost power since muffler and cat was removed. Will my truck lose some power and not be running as well if I cut off the muffler and leave the cat? Thanks

i have seen it heard it and felt it, its awsome and there is alot more power do it for sure.

I just unbolted my whole exhaust system. Including the cat The truck sounds soo good. What do you suggest for a pipe size? I plan on putting a cold air intake on and a bully dog exhaust. Some people say 4" for "x" amount of horsepower, or should I just leave it 3.5"? Thanks

What you experienced is a shift in the low end torque to a higher RPM. Seems like you lost power, but it actually "moved". You have the answers, do it!!

And it might look something like this...if you cut the little locating pin off the mating front pipe and rotate it.

I have the 4 in turbo back exhaust and all I noticed from installing it was a small increase in power, and a little better fuel economy. I would go with the full exhaust kit 4in, but just getting rid of the muffler will help. With the new exhaust and a cold air intake I uped my mpg by 2mpg and I am certain that I actually get more power and torque at a lower rpm. Just my 2 cents

2004 Ford f350 6.0 4x4. 4" silverline turbo back, cold air intake, six speed manual tranny, sct x3 with php tunes, ficm 40 from php, 373 rear end, running full synthetic in every part that takes oil. Arp head studs and egr delete. Coolant bypass and oil bypass.

exhaust size

I'm not going to put on a bolt on exhaust. I'm getting a custome pipe job done. Just going to put a bolt in delete pipe in place of my cat and my muffler. Just wondering if i should keep it 3.5"

Sound level w/o muffler?

What is the difference in sound levels w/o the muffler? I don't live in the woods somewhere- my neighbors are up close and personal (next house is about 20 feet away from my truck). Is it just a throatier sound, or is it seriously obnoxious? I want to keep the peace, but I would love to go straight pipes.

turbo bark??

Also, I read this on the comments from a Youtube video of a 6.0 straight pipe. Is this valid? : dont you know its bad to just let out of the throttle like that. It may sounds cool but you will snap the shaft for the turbo cause they are not wastegated turbos an it can only push so much air back into the intake. thats where that turbo bark comes from That's a little scary if it's true...

hey bsclayton i live somewhere where the next house is 10 feet away from my truck and i removed my cat and do not have a problem with them... with removing the muffler u get a louder whistle and a more manly sounding truck... i would do it and consider removing your cat too
