Does the down pipe add power or just reduce EGT?

I was told by one shop that all power comes from muffler and cat back and not the down pipe and have dyno tests to prove it. They said down pipe didn't didn't add any significant hp but did lower EGT.
Can anyone else confirm this? And since I'm new to this, what is the benefit to lower EGTs?

With lower EGTs you can put your foot in it more and not lift because your going to melt your pistons.

Re: Does the down pipe add power or just reduce EGT?

Hmmm..
can't imagine a muffler and cat GIVING power

but sounds like your shop has a bit of learnin to do...
a good mandral bend downpipe will do more to evacuate the exhaust gases than any muffler or cat....
and since the engine is just a big air pump...
more air out, means more air can come in... and therefore more HP...

when I added my turbo back exhaust I could immediately feel the difference... 10 to 30 hp is not unheard of...

Re: Does the down pipe add power or just reduce EGT?

I'm gonna put on dual Kittys and Muflers if that is true!!!
Lower EGT's equal more air flow which allows you to put more fuel to the motor to go faster!! Like JB said more air is mo betta! There are more technical ways to put it but the bottom line is all about the more air you can introduce to your motor the better it will run and more efficiently too. Once you've accomplished the question of air you can safely add more fuel via chips, programmers, etc.

Yeah, I thought it sounded strange but what was even stranger was that they said they ran the tests using MBRP exhaust systems.

Maybe what they meant is that you can get more performance gains by replacing a stock pipes cat and muffler with more open or delete options than the power gain by replacing the downpipe with, say a 4" when stock was 3-3.5.

What I mean is, the cat and muffler are large restrictors, so opening them up does more than making an existing, pretty open pipe a little more open.

Does tha make any sense?

Re: Does the down pipe add power or just reduce EGT?

Sydwaiz,

If you want to really confuse them ask them how the tested the system and with what equipment they got their results. If they say a dyno, then start laughing. The HP an exhaust system produces can be made to vary so much on a dyno it's not even funny, even if you're trying to play fair the difference between say 20 HP and 25 HP in conescutive runs is very common, down pipe or not. How you applied the fuel, when and who hit the dyno button all change that outcome some and they either don't know that or want to sell what they have in stock vs what you might have asked about.
