Edge Platinum w/juice???

I could really use some objective input regarding the Edge Platinum w/juice. I've installed this system about three months ago and last week w/cruise control on 65mph truck power cut out suddenly and power began sputtering badly. Was able to limp home under 50mph. Visual found nothing wrong next day and been running fine since. I'm taking it in to a local Guru who comes highly recommened to have it checked out. His first comment was "Edge really bad". Says he's seen blown mains and trannies from them. He recommends SCT Flash or Diablo. The tranny tune I have had issues with but what about the rest? Edge boasts' safeguards galore. I've researched(google mainly) before I bought and since my incident and find nothing but great reviews. What's the Real difference? It seems to me they'd all be close to the same stuff, wouldn't it? I don't care for blown smoke from an SCT dealer( 4 example). I'd like solid info. I'm not racing and I need longevity from my truck. I don't want to blow it up. The edge HAS given great power, little smoke and mileage gains but at what cost. Thanx.

Truck: 2004 F250 6.0, silver, all stock basically except KN cool air intake, Banks Monster exhuast( turbo back), Edge Platinum w/juice, billet grill and rhino lining. oh yeah a Vallet alarm w/remote start

The Platinum is a module, the SCT and Diablo are tuners. HUGE differences in the two. Modules "piggyback" onto your computer system much like chips used to do. They are "on the fly" adjustable but you are limited with them to the canned tunes the company (in this case Edge) provides.

The tranny issues with the Edge are with the older versions. Those versions were famous for tearing up your tranny however I have yet to read about a Platinum equipped truck that has shredded a tranny. With regard to the safety features built into the Edge, there are many. Defueling settings for both EGTs and shifting are a couple. But what you don't see mentioned very often is that Edge actually monitored cylinder pressures while creating the tuning. This was done specifically to reduce the chances of puking.

Many will come on here and tell you to ditch the Edge. Very few will tell you to get the Diablo due to it's long and storied history of puking (I've personally seen cases where it caused puking on a 40hp tune!). Most of the folks who will tell you to get rid of the Edge will advise you to get an SCT. I will too if you are doing extensive mods to your engine or intend to do a lot of racing. But, until I quit reading posts like these (both taken from another site), I will NEVER use one (I'm not a racer either):

Quote:
Just got my new SCT programs...., raced it against my buddies new 07 classic GMC duramax(....hypertech max energy programmer) tied we were neck and neck and 100 mph. except his didnt have a bunch of coolant missing when we were done...any suggestions on why my coolant went good bye???
(Paraphrased to stay within site rules) and;

Quote:
Truck is in sig. Ok truck is puking again. Now when the head gasket were bad most of it was on the passenger side wheel well. Now it is only coming from the degas bottle.
(the truck in his sig is SCT tuned)

I know a lot of people swear by the SCT and I hope it gives them years of reliable service and I know some trucks puke stock, so anytime you add power you run that risk to one degree or another. However I see too many posts like those above (a simple search on this site (or any other PSD site) for headgaskets and 6.0, will net you pages of information. Then look at the sigs of those asking) for me to feel comfortable using the SCT for power.

That is my $.02 on those questions. With regard to the issue you mentioned, I would suggest you contact Edge and explain what happened to them. I know they have updated their software for the Platinum and it could well be that they have addressed your issue in their update. If so, they'll give you an RMA # and ask you to send it in for a reprogram (usually at no charge).

I've been using the Edge Platinum on my truck for 90,000 trouble free miles. The Platinum actually offers pretty good tranny control and protection, so you don't really have to worry about the tranny like you did pre-Platinum. It's probably not as fast as the SCT custom tunes, but for people like me who don't race the truck and tow frequently, the shift on the fly capabilities make it perfect. I'd call Edge like mentioned above and see what they say. I'm sure they will take care of you. I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service.

I can say that I have owned both and on the same truck. For the first 40k+ miles I had the edge with not one problem until the end when I got brave and raced a rice burner down the freeway for way to long and my egts got way to hot (But that is my fault and not any brand of programmer OR Fords)! Since that Happened I had to see what the hype was about so since the edge was all pulled out so that I could take to dealer I jumped aboard the SCT xCal3 bandwagon. So far the only difference that I have really noticed is the shifting of the SCT is way better but as far as power im not seeing the difference that everyone else brags about. The Edge Plat is a darn good device to have and since it has the gauges and everything else I have to say that it is prob my fav of them to even though Im still running the SCT.

Your tranny will be fine with an SCT in fact, there is nothing better that I have seen for your tranny. But depending on your driving style and your choice of tunes, your headgaskets may not be (see my post above)..........

Thanks alot for the input. This is actually my 2nd module from Edge and should be their latest version. The first one kept reseting itself. Their customer service has been good but this unit has caused serious concern about damaging my truck. The tranny tune is very unpredictable( a common theme on this site) and I've had the trans slip into nuetral on the freeway and had to pull over but it went back in gear when I slowed to stop. Having my truck suddenly lose power and sputter badly very well could be other things (fuel filters, pump etc.) and not the Edge but it has been running fine since. So ???. Edge Products has given me an RMA & I could return it for store credit where I bought it but other products seem to have concerns too. Sounds like at least a couple of you think the Edge is a good product with good safe guards. Also sounds like a module is better then a tuner. I appreciate your time. Thx

I have been running the Edge/Platinum combo for 25,000 miles. I also have a Evolution with a trans only program that was installed prior to the Platinum. You have to remember that the transmission has a learn mode that takes five minutes and starts when the transmission reaches 110 degrees. This learn mode takes place every time the truck is turned off and restarted. During this learn mode the transmission can act strange and pick up some funny habits. My suggestion is to set the Attitude Trans control to Learn Periodic and run the truck normally (some moderate throttle) until the transmission goes through the learn mode, then before shutting off the truck, go into the Attitude menu settings and set the learn mode to off. This should set a fairly good shift pattern. It will be necessary to repeat this procedure every few months as the transmission wears.
