Exaust void warranty?

I was interested in getting a turbo back 4" exaust. I wasn't sure whether it was legal in NY to do it without a cat so I called my local Ford dealer. They told me that if I change the exaust it would void my warranty. Does that make sence. Even if I keep the cat. Or do they just not know what they are saying?

Some dealers will...some won't.
That's the best answer I can give you.

Re: Exaust void warranty?

you need to find a aftermarket friendly dealer. There are 2 dealers in my area that are not. But........the one I go to doesn't mind is you have a programmer, intake, or exhaust. They did state that they will only replace 1 tranny under warranty though if you are running these.

Re: Exaust void warranty?

Then you also have those dealers that will say no problem until the time warranty work is needed or Ford steps in and overrides what the dealer says and denys repairs.

There is just no simple answer to this one.

BINGO! Any repairs that require a lot of parts and/or labor are subject to the field techs and/or regional guys for approval or denial, especially repairs like head gaskets, warped heads, etc. I have an aftermarket exhaust and had my turbo replaced, but the y-pipe was also shot, and the turbo had obvious actuator problems. I don't believe that turbos even show up on Ford's radar screen anymore because they go through so many of them on these trucks. If you pop your head gaskets or your transmission goes, you can bet you might get red-flagged for further investigation. We all know aftermarket exhaust doesn't really cause failures on these trucks, and I think most field techs and reps know that too. Just keep it emissions legal, and only do a cat-back if you're really worried.

Re: Exaust void warranty?

Thanks for all the replys. Will the cat back exaust do anything for the truck or would I just be puting on a shiny new exaust for cosmetic purposes. And by doing this would I have a problem with my warranty.

It will give it a little more noise and rumble. It won't lower EGTs as much as a turbo back. If EGTs aren't a problem for you now, then it's not an issue. Can Ford PROVE that a cat-back exhaust caused any engine issue? That's the question nobody here can answer. Rememember, they really would have to prove that your cat-back (if that's what you go with) caused the part to fail. Technically, a cat-back won't cause anything to fail hardware wise, but they potentially could say that it caused a turbo to fail, or causes running issues (if you get some running issues later on in the truck's life). The chances of that happening are probably slim, but you never know. Once again, it depends on the level of knowledge your dealer's techs have, how much of a pain in the a** your SA is, or how angry the field tech might be on the day he/she shows up.

Realistically, the only thing most guys here have to worry about is if their truck is not emissions legal and they take it to the dealer for warranty work. A lot of dealers don't like cat deletes, and some won't touch them if the cat is removed. If the cat is in, I think most of us don't have issues with warranty work, as the cat is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system anyway and pretty much keeps things "in check" with how Ford shipped the truck.
