Exhaust Brake

I have a 2005 F250 6.0SD 4x4 with automatic. I tow 12,000 pounds plus and it can sometimes be a bear to slow down on a steep grade. I see That BD now makes an exhaust brake for the 6.0 automatic. If I was to use this does anyone know if it will affect my warranty?

Re: Exhaust Brake

Well, I have a BD exhaust brake on my 05. I was told by the installer that they don't work as well on an auto trans. It works great on the 6 speeds. As far as warranty, I do believe it will void any warranty if the brake caused the part to fail. I took that chance. I also talked to someone first hand who has ran the BD brake for over 200K on two different trucks and never had a problem. I would talk to your dealer and see what their take on the brake is.

Re: Exhaust Brake

I cant imagine having an issue slowing my truck pulling 23k down any mountain here in the west. The Tow Haul mode in both of my 6.0's have never left me wanting to change. 80k maybe...

Re: Exhaust Brake

hougie--I don't know how well it works on the auto since I have a manual trans. But on the manual it works very well. Not as good as a real jake brake though.

bogg--I would have to say the exhaust brake on a manual works better at slowing down a load than the tow/haul alone on an auto.

rideblue--I see you have a programmer. That will void the warranty. So having an exhaust brake is just more noticable.

Re: Exhaust Brake

I don't know about the other tuners, but Innovative has a tune called agressive tow. One of the features is an exhaust/jake brake function. from what I read on their site and heard from others is the turob functions as an exhaust brake. They can probably answer your questions better than me. Keith

Re: Exhaust Brake

three observations

12000# is very near the limit for the F250 so you are at the outer edge of capability on things like brakes etc.

an exhaust brake retards the engine speed to create braking effect. on a std transmission, this is effective because with clutch fully engaged, the drive line is solid from crankshaft to wheels.

for an exhaust brake to work on an automatic where there is normally NOT a solid driveline because of the torque converter, the brake is only going to work if its control features include a torque converter lockup.

This can be done by using tow haul mode on the Torqshift transmission.

I'd first have the trans and PCM checked to insure tow/haul is working. Exh brakes are a $1000-1200 deal plus install. I looked into it briefly and decided against it because I couldn't buy just the brake (alrady have 10gal of 125psi air on board).

BD has the torque converter lock up function that must be used with the auto trans. Here is more info on the brake. http://www.bd-power.com/ford/product...es&tt=ford
I had my brake professionally installed by a BD dealer it was $1750.00 installed. I am hoping that the cost will justify the brake over the life of the truck. But I got the brake more for safety than cost.
