Re: Exhaust brake with the VVT turbo

I don't think its possible without causing problems. the VGT turbo uses signals from the PCM to close and open the vanes. If these signals are boogered with its bound to set a code and cause operational troubles. Easiest and safest way would, in my opinion, be to do it in the programming.

Re: Exhaust brake with the VVT turbo

I really dont think it would be a problem. All you would have to do is give the EBP sensor a false "correct" reading. Then use a electronic module to put out the correct PWM signal to close the vanes in the turbo. Since the CVT solenoid is not a stepper motor (like the egr valve)it should not return a signal to the PCM (strictly a pcm output). The all you would need it a switch to arm and disarm it.

Im actually quite surprised no one has done it yet, especially for us manual guys.

I'm going to be pursuing this venture and ill keep those who are interested up to date.

Re: Exhaust brake with the VVT turbo

I will add my 2 cents and say we have enough trouble with the turbo to be adding the stress of an exhaust brake to it.
Just do it right and put on a REAL exhaust brake, worth every penny to me.

I wouldn't be so sure...

It's a viable and safe prospect for a less expensive exhaust brake. Enough said.

Re: Exhaust brake with the VVT turbo

The EBP sensor is no longer used.....

Inferred EBP Description
• 6.0L diesel engines use the EBP sensor for control of the
turbocharger and EGR systems
• With the implementation of the 03.25MY 06E17 action the
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) eliminates the use of the
EBP sensor input.
– Exhaust Backpressure is now “inferred” through the use of inputs
from the MAF, MAP, BARO, and EOT sensors. These sensors now
provide a more critical function for turbocharger control.
– As a result, the new PCM function places increased importance on
MAF input, MAP input , turbo performance, intake integrity, exhaust
integrity, etc. It is possible that driveability issues may arise or be
more pronounced following 06E17 update.
– Aftermarket equipment such as intake or exhaust systems also may
have a more adverse effect on vehicle operation following update.
• Following calibration update or KAM clear it is necessary to
allow the PCM to execute an adaptive turbocharger learn
process which exercises the turbocharger at idle to “learn”
control duty cycle for optimum performance.

The EBP sensor isn't used on late 03 and really early 04 trucks that have the latest reflash. Other than that, it's still used in all the other trucks.
