I am looking into getting an aftermarket exhaust for my '05 SD. I had single chamber 50 series w\ an off-road H-pipe no cats on my old F-150 and it was very loud in the cab. I noticed the different systems that people are using on this site and wonder how much difference the loudness is from stock to AM (inside the cab)? A little louder is not bad and I don’t care how loud outside the cab it is but I have a 10 week old and I don’t think it is good for her to hear a loud exhaust all the time. Any help would be appreciated.
I installed a Banks monster exhaust two weeks ago. I used to think they were loud, but with the cat in place, other than a throb when it first starts it is quiet. My thoughts are that the cat makes a big difference on all of the exhausts and keeps them toned down.
I had my muffler replaced with a straight piece of pipe. I kept the cat and added a 4" chrome tip. It sounds awesome when you get on it, but it is quiet as stock when cruising. A lot cheaper than buying a whole system.
I never said cheaper was better, but I bet I got the same results or better with mine vs. a whole system. YOU say the cat is not necessary, but here in Cali. the dealer and FoMoCo say it is. Oh yeah, I only spent $50 to have the exhaust done. Less back pressure and a little less turbo lag!
I too like a little bit of rumble and turbo whistle without waking the family when i leave...
my efforts on my 03 6.0L Ex :
muff delete, nice sound outside with windows up, but REAL loud otherwise.
and WAY too much in cab noise (drone) on long trips for US
Full turbo back with Cat since it is a FEDERAL emission law - nice sound, but a lot of turbo whistle outside - would catch EVERYONE's attention - even at idle !
SO, when I got my 05 EX, just went with the Walker BTM for about $65 and really like it... just the right sound for ME and about 200 degree EGT drop ...
i went with the 4" cat back with a 5" tip and straight piped. it sound great, the whistle out the back is very cool and it was cheap. i also live in socal, keep the cat.i have talked to alot of dealers(Banks,BTW,RBP and Custom Trucks) here and they said to keep the cat. i have also been told that it will make your check engine light come on. just my .02!

So far we have sold over 4000 6.0 systems and never had a check engine light call from any of our customers or wholesale accounts, sounds like someone is trying to sell you something they stock vs a turbo back system.
We sell the MBRP turbo back and cat back systems everyday here and the MBRP is the ONLY system that I am aware of that keeps the cat totally stock and allows you to bolt it in place as designed by Ford. This gets you a mandrel bent larger diameter down pipe that gets you the max possible flow rate etc.
