I was driving home yesterday and was thinking about getting an exhuast system, then I thought why not just replace the muffler with an MBRP muffler and put a nice tip on it. I was looking at some mufflers online and noticed they all have the 4'' inlet and outlet. If I take it to a shop and have them install it would that work or would that extra half inch diameter mess me up. The reason why I'm thinking this way is I can't afford a full system. Also will it sound good? Im sure I wont improve in mileage but Im not to worried about that. I really just want the sound.
I dont know much about diesels so im going to ask more than likley a stupid question but, I saw a truck the other day and when he took off it sounded like a blue angels jet taking off, is that the exhuast or someting more?
Thanks!!!

The MBRP (and most aftermarket performance mufflers) are a "straight-thru" design. Meaning the inlet and outlet are in line with each other, so the exhaust flow runs in a straight line from the inlet to the outlet. Your factory muffler is not like this at all (take a look under your truck and it will be apparent). So to put a straight-thru muffler on there will take some fabricating. Furthermore, if you put a 4" muffler into a 3.5" exhaust system, you are going to create turbulence/backpressure in the exhaust system (a bad thing). The turbulence is a result of the gases entering the muffler expanding from 3.5" to 4", then being forced to reduce again to 3.5". You would be better off to have a muffler shop fab you up a piece of pipe to simply replace the muffler and leave the rest of the system alone until you put on a full aftermarket system.
The "jet" sound you heard was from a truck with the 03 turbo. The 03 turbo has a considerably louder whistle to it than later models.

cheapest way would be to get a muffler shop to replace the muffler with a piece of pipe and then put you a nice looking tip on it until you can save up for a complete 4'' system IMO
is the straight pipe to loud to crank early in the morning?
Depends on how hard you partied the previous night/morning.
I have a 4" straight piped exhaust and I use to live in a zero lot line neighborhood and I never had a complaint. I also just moved to a town with a noise ordinance and havent had a problem at all so your most likely going to be fine.

Also, shop around its easy to find exhaust systems for around $300, which is almost what your looking at spending for just the muffler, and a nice tip.
If money is the only thing keeping you from buying the kit you want PM me, I can work something out with one of my friends, and can probably get you a turboback kit without a tip for under $200 bucks.
