Upgrades and Aftermarket - 6.0L EngineUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 2003-Up Super Duty or Excursion with 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.0L Power Stroke engine.
Well Ford doesn't call it that, but all the OBDII cars and trucks have one. You can plug into it using a WDS and view what all the sensors have been reading. Thought you might want to know, if you didn't know already.
Good info- Thanks for posting it! Stuff like this is always good to know.

Was reading one of the auto magazines yesterday and saw mention of the CarChip device. They aren't compatible with the 6.0L's yet, but might be interesting to get later in the year once they are.
http://www.Autotap.com seems to have software I might get for a laptop or pda. I could see a PDA hanging off that center hook under the ash tray/cupholder and leaving it in all the time.
Just a thought, maybe this would be nice to have when doing a test drive of the truck I/you want to buy....
Anyways, Autotap has a demo of the software available on their site. I'm downloading it now.
Note: I figured out the demo. You open the included log file, create whatever gauges you want, and then play the log file.
I've been playing with this autotap program and am trying to see if the pyro, boost, and trans temp info can be found from the PCM through the OBDII connector.
Basically I think these are the mappings:
Pyrometer=Calcuted Convertor Temperature, red line at 1250F
Boost=Manifold Absolute Pressure, I don't know what would be bad, maybe someone could explain what the importance of this gauge is, and if the surge point is for a stock 6.0L, or what to look for.
Automatic Transmission Oil Temp, Red line at what temperature for 6.0L?
I know I am asking for information that's on here somewhere, but I can't find it.
The factory recorder is a freeze frame type. If something goes wrong, like a check engine light comes on, it records what all the sensors are reading at that moment. It does not have memory to look at, cannot contiueously record for any amount of time.
Yes, I get that. A laptop can record events (with autotap), maybe a PDA can't. What I don't get, at the moment, is, what the boost meter tells you, and what is the transmission danger zone. But thanks for the reply.
I guess I've been asleep in class - last I heard the 6.0L with it's CANBus interface was not handled by the aftermarket OBDII folks. Are you saying Autotap has a physical interface for it now? (I understand they probably don't handle all the data cleanly right out of the box, and that's what you're trying to solve...)

You're right about Ford adding the 6 and 14 CAN pins to the DLC. They also use the 13 pin as well as the J1850PWM 2, 4, 5, 10, 16 pins.
I don't know if the actual cable connector has all 16 pins enabled, but I suspect it would as different manufacturers use different pins. I think the Autotap Ford enhanced software should get the data needed for the typical add on gauges. I would think all that would be needed for the CANbus would be a future software upgrade.
Note: After reading Oasis 0418, it basically kills my idea until the software for 6.0L PSD is written. But at least I know what WSD is now.
I did a lot reading this afternoon. Since CANbus seems to be a network protocol and future OBDII allows for telemetry, it seems the EPA wants to monitor vehilces and if your polluting, you get a call.
Duncan is correct. None of the mainstream aftermarket OBDII guys (including AutoTap) have hardware that will connect to the HS-CAN bus. Everyone seems to be claiming that they will have it by sometime this fall though.
