Re: GEAR VENDORS WITH THE TORQSHIFT TRANNY

How long do you think the install took all together and how removable is it? I trade every 80-90K which is about 20-24 months, so I need to be able to move it from truck to truck. Other than labor would it go back to stock easily?

Thanks

Hey,

You guys are in Florida?? South Florida?? Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area??? (sorry for all the repeating questions)

Lets see if we can hook up, I would be interested in seeing the GV overdrive unit. Also to see what mods some of you guys have done to you 6L's other than the ordinary Intake, exhaust, module/programmer.

Thanks

Yeah, that would be nice...Im in West Palm Beach but I travel daily to Ft. Lauderdale area. Pick a day, lunch would be great?Im sure we'd have plenty of info to pass back & forth! lol.. Richard?...

....The install total actual time for ME took about 10 hrs.The installation sheet that comes with the G.V. is only ONE page...well actually two, the other is an electrical diagram..which, better make sure you get the right one, as they originally sent me an electrical diagram for a 7.3! I was on the phone a dozen times with the G.V. techs who were a great help!..I couldnt of done it without thier guidance!! The guys at gear vendors say they do a complete install in about 4 hrs minus driveshaft down time.Being a novice & this was my first install, I think I did OK, time wise.If I had to do another I think I could take a 3rd of the time off.

As far as removing Gear Vendors back to stock setup, not a problem at all, just be sure to keep all your original components, i.e. oem tailshaft housing, 2 piece driveshaft, driveshaft carrier bracket(had to remove to clear new one piece driveshaft) forward driveshaft fixed yoke & its mounting bolts. Also, you do have to CUT one wire in your tranny wiring harness going into the side of Torqshift to attach a two wire, cat. 5 wire harness that has butt connectors already attached,to a single brown wire with an orange tracer which works the torq converter lock up which plugs into the G.V. control module mounted under your dash. Sooo, naturally, this brown/orange tracer wire would have to be reconnected together when removing Gear Vendors unit so your torq converter will continue to lock up correctly.

Moving from truck to truck is EXACTLY what my plans are!! ...And yes, I will do the complete install AGAIN!
LOL

Hope this helps,
Lenny

If you have a 4x4, do you have to purchase a special version of overdrive? If you are just adding the gears to the rear wheels (i.e. bhind between the tranny and drive shaft), then looks like you will run into a problem when driving in 4x4 (your rear wheels turning at a different speed than the front). I am sure Gear Vendors has that all worked out. I am just curious what the solution is. How does the new unit mount in relation to the transfer case?

[/ QUOTE ]

....I dont know if you would call it a special version, maybe? but for my 4X4, I use a Gear Vendors 273 model, which is a 2nd OVERDRIVE assy only, no underdrive. As I previously posted, G.V. does not offer an underdrive gear selection for the 5 speed Torqshift. ...No need for it, lower gears so close already

Now, what G.V. does with the 4X4 equipped trucks is utilize a 4X4 LOCKOUT. In essence what this entails is, you have to open your dash up, which after I figured that out, it really is no big deal... You have to remove your speedometer cluster, to get to a single blue wire, which plugs into the back of the cluster...Yes, they say there is no other place to make this connection... A cat. 5 wire harness supplied by G.V., clamps onto this wire with a simple electrical connector on one end & the other plugs into the Gear Vendors control module, which you mount under the dash, marked '4X4 lockout'.
As for the operation of this 4X4 lockout(which I found out by trial..no mention in the instructions or owners manual) when you engage your 4 wheel drive, the G.V. control module AUTOMATICALLY LOCKS OUT the Gear Vendors overdrive from ENGAGING into overdrive...and the kicker is...the G.V. is INOPERATABLE UNTIL you actually SHUT OFF & RESTART your engine! I called G.V. and this is installed logic they want to be CERTAIN you are not in 4 wheel drive & in 2nd overdrive at the SAME time...otherwise, as the tech joked, my truck would be going in circles!LOL
As for mounting the G.V. to the transfer case, simple: remove existing stock tailshaft housing(was a booger to get it to seperate from the transfer case(silicone) )Gear Vendors supplies an adaptor housing to mount EXACTLY in place(same bolt pattern as stock)on transfer case and the G.V. attaches to the other end of this adaptor housing.... pretty straight forward. A splined coupler, which comes with a selection of same size shims, which are placed inside the 'long end' or forward part of the coupler, to take up excessive end play within the two shafts. Therefore, the coupler/spline mounts inside adaptor housing, connecting the tranny output shaft to the G.V. input shaft.

..I know this is lenghty, but I hope it explains

Hey Lenny, make sure the guys you are responding to realize that you are a master mechanic in your own right. I worked with a guy that was very experienced in the GV units installing mine. This is not a job for amateurs.

The average "would be" mechanic would screw this up.
