Head Studs...

Just wondering about the cheapest way to have the heads studded... I can do most of the simple work on my truck but i dont have the equipment to lift the cab... anyone who has had their truck studded i'd appreciate if you told me how you had yours done, or the cheapest way to do it... for example did you just blow them and pay the ford tech a few hundred cash and sneak it in under warranty work, or did you have to pay for the labor from a shop? any help would be nice

Thumbs up Studs

I had my studs installed by the dealer when they were replacing the head gaskets. Most dealerships will do the studs (if you provide them) while doing warranty work at no additional cost.

They won't replace head gaskets again under warranty after the studs go in because it is no longer Ford spec. I have seen a number of posts with relatively mild trucks still puking after studs were installed because the tolerance spec Ford uses to determine the flatness of the head surface sucks. I have seen .004 variance diagonally across new Ford heads and Ford just slaps them on because it meets there spec. Anybody with any sense would have heads like that decked.

I Was Told By The Tech At My Dealer. That If This Happen's Again To Make Sure That I Bring It Back. And Not To Go To Another Dealer. If I Was To Take It To Another Dealer, And They Reported That The Studs Were Not Oem. My Dealer Would Have To Pay Back The Money They Were Paid For The Repair.

I AM IN NO WAY A EXPERT ON IN AUTO MECHANIC'S, BUT AFTER THREE 6.0 I HAVE BEEN WELL SCHOOLED BY MY FORD TECH. BLOWN HEAD GASKET'S, REPLACE HEADS, CHECK BLOCK FOR WARPING AND NO GREATER VARIANCE DIAGONALLY .001. I DON'T THINK ALL THE PUKING AFTER STUD'S WERE INSTALLED ARE A RESULT OF THE STUD'S. I THINK THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BLOCK WERE WARPED.

KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST OF THE TECH'S AT YOUR LOCAL DEALER ARE SHOOTING IN THE DARK. THIS ENGINE WAS OUT BEFORE MOST TECHS WERE TRAINED ON THE
6.0. AND FORD WAS JUST THROWING PARTS AT THE TECHS. I HAVE FOUND THAT IF THE EGR IS PULLED AND BLOCKED OFF. THE 6.0 ACTS LIKE A DIFFERENT TRUCK.
