Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

Greetings,

My truck sits a lot during the off season. I only use my truck in bad weather or when towing (I ride motorcycles primarily). So for a good portion of the spring/summer/fall, my truck sits. Currently have less than 9k on it.

Something (I think squirrels) are eating my hood insulation. It is on the passenger side, above the large insulated tube that runs to the turbo. I found some acorns in the insulation. Chunks of it about the size of cotton balls are falling down into the engine compatment. I stuck a couple of moth balls up there, and it seemed to deter them a little but it was short lived.

Anyone got an idea of how to keep them out? I was thinking about somehow attaching a piece of chicken wire or hardware cloth to the blanket.

Thoughts? Thanks.

P.

Re: Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

The insulation blanket could be the least of your problems. If the critters are building a nest somewhere under your hood, they will chew through any wires, etc. that are in their way. You may want to put out traps and remove them from your environment

Kinda hard to do. I live in the woods. Further, My wife doesn't think that garages were meant for motor vehicles. Soo back to my original thought.... Chemicals? Deterrents? Barriers? :-)

Tnx

Re: Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

Put Pinesol in a windex type bottle and spray the heck out of it 1-2 times a week. You may want to mix in some amonia, cayenne pepper etc.

It might be cruel but you could always leave some extra antifreeze in a pan under there, maybe they will get a lil thirsty. Always a chance. Worked for us while we were in Iraq having trouble with animals destroying all of our stuff.

Clothes dryer sheets. Works for the rats in Seattle.
Tie a few around various items in the engine compartment.

Re: Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

Moth Balls....Use them in all boats when Shrink Wrapping for storage. Just place a few somewhere so they will not fall out going down the road.

Re: Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

12 gauge shotgun. Hang one of the dead critters near your truck. They will get the hint.

Re: Help, Something is eating my Underhood insulation.

I live in CT and had the same problem. The mice got into my aircleaner of my Expedition and when I drove it one day the paper came apart and stuck on the airflow sensor and the engine shut down. My vote is mice, a friend of mine had 1500 dollars damage as they ate some wires and his harness had to be replace. I finally put out some traps and got 4 of the them, problem gone. Glue traps work good too.
