How to access turbo up-pipe?

After crawling around over/under/all around my engine I've finally given up and thought I'd post here for a solution...

I want to access the area where the exhaust comes up from the manifold and goes up to the turbo on the passenger side. Specifically the exhaust up-pipe to EGR cooler flange. I looked and it seems the only way possible might be to remove the passenger side inner fender well and tire and get in there from the side. Has anyone accessed this or replaced an up-pipe that could give me some pointers. I just don't feel like spending a weekend removing the turbo, etc... just to get in there.

And no, I don't need to remove the up-pipe completely. Just loosen it a little. Now that I'm out of waranty, I just have something I need to install in there.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You got the right idea for access to the pipe. You will need all the extensions you can find to help make it easier to get to the top of the pipe. I would suggest your plans include some welding.

Welding even for just the disk? I was told it just fits in the recess of the tube where it Y's off the the coler, and bolts back in place. I have an 03, so I don't have the restrictive diverter thing inside the tube...

It will still allow some heat to enter the EGR cooler so welding has it's advantages.
