I am wanting to install my exhaust probe for my attitude on my 05 6.0. I did my 03 6.0 with the manifold still on the engine, but was thinking about taking it off this time. Those metal shavings scare me. I guess my question is can i reuse the gaskets on the exhaust ports or do i have to get new ones???
Where exactly is the best place for the probe??
I'd leave the manifold on. It's more trouble than it's worth to take it off. Start with the smallest bit possible and move up one bit at a time until you get to the final size. Your shavings would be so minute, it's impossible to hurt the turbo. You are on the exhaust side, so no biggie.

That's not what the manufacturer's recommend. And, just because it is on the exhaust side, that doesn't mean you can't hurt the turbo. There are 2 turbines in a turbo, and each are vulnerable when they are spinning at high speed to any metal particles. I think it can be damaged and while you can drill without removing the manifold, you have to be very careful. I think there were some posts on here with some tricks, like magnetizing your bit, etc.
i know of a number of people that just leave the engine running. it blows all the chips back out the hole instead of into the turbo. just make sure you wear glasses.
Agreed, taking all the precautions is the best procedure for anything. Installing with the manifold on seems to have become the norm for most of the turbo cars and trucks in the various performance sectors. However, the only way to gaurantee no issues is to remove the manifold. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I think everyone is a little worried when tapping manifold while on engine. That being said, I have not read one post of turbo damage from tapping manifold. To me that means alot of people, with all levels of ability, have not had any problems. There are about 50 different "tricks" and all seem to work.
you could put grease on the bit, magnetize it(like was stated above), use a vacuum to suck all the metal bits out, drill it while running(again, like was stated above), and a few other ones that I cant think of right now.
i posted a thread about this same issue(a week or two ago)and just finished mine an hour ago...it was super simple..i started out with a 1/8" drill bit and worked up in very small increments(16th" at a time) until i reached the 5/16 for the tap...i had one of those little telescopic retrieving magnets stuck to the bit while working very slowly and cleaning the bit very often...after each cut into the manifold i would drag the magnet towards the hole while holding it about 1/8th from the manifold(so as not to magnitize the manifold)...all i dragged out was cast iron "dust"...i finished by using the magnet on the tap and working slowly,backing up the tap every so often to break off any cut material....i installed the thermocouple fitting and then the thermocouple,and thank god it didn't bottom out on the other side of the manifold...when you get under the truck you'll see the spot to install the fitting...i put mine just at the beginning of the radius where the manifold starts to turn up,with a slight inboard to outboard angle..i finished the rest of the install of the juice/attitude in another hour (so much for 5 minute install huh...)i ran the attitude cable through the seam between the dash and dashboard(you know the clutter catcher on top)...that got it hidden,and then i drilled a hole through the tall grommet behind the e-brake and fished it up to the juice....mine turned out super clean and all worked fine...don't be afraid to drill that hole in the manifold...have fun
