Jake Brake

So, my SCT X3 towing tunes have a Jake Brake option. How does this work? Do you need an add-on or does it somehow create back-pressure?

A "Jake Brake" is technically a solenoid activated opening of the exhaust valves in the overhead. Jake brake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IIRC, the SCT tow tune uses the VG Turbo to increase exhaust backpressure.

could using that option harm the truck at all? What activates the jake brake with the SCT tune? The brake pedal?

I've been running a "tow w/ jake brake " for a year. I love it. It just shuts the VGT vanes on deceleration. It helps a bunch towing in hilly country and it can't be beat towing in the mountains in the winter. Load it in the truck and give it a try. If you don't like it then take it out. I can tell you this, it'll excercise your turbo vanes and help keep them from sticking.

Possibly, if you subscribe to the theory that the more you use something (in this case, the VG turbo) it will have a shorter useful life. A combination of engine speed (RPM) and road speed (MPH) are written into the tune by the programmer.
