MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound comparo
Gentlemen,
I tried the testpipe on my already mufflerless Crewcab Short bed and discovered that the interior noise didn't justify the exterior noise. I still have the MBRP testpipe and was going to install it with a turbo-back MBRP system. My question is this:
How does the interior noise of the MBRP Duals (or the single for that matter) compare to the straight pipe??
I was going to go for the single due to the larger muffler, but I really want the duals for the cool factor. I just don't want to regret my decision after spending that much more money. Please help.
I have decided that the 6.0 needs a muffler of some sort. In my case, the kitty is acting as such. Without it, I can really hear the sound out of the tailpipe in the cab. Maybe I should just get the longbed so that the exhaust tip is that much further back.

Call Mark Craig @ DPPI. He has several sound bites from different combinations that you can listen to.

Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound comparo
I found the dual system, with it's shorter muffler to be too loud.
I simply ordered another muffler from Mark and installed it in my dual system.
I simply cut the pipe leading into the short muffler the duals came with, and installed the extra muffler. Wish I had a picture to show you, but it goes like this Downpipe, intermediate pipe, muffler, muffler dual tail pipes.
The sound level is now PERFECT...
Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound comparo
I have a kitty free dual system, and I don't think it is all that loud inside. I really only notice the sound inside when I cruise at 75 MPH or faster. Then all I get is a smooth rumble. Not overbearing, like you can't carry on a conversation, just a quiet rumble. It sounds really cool when you go under an underpass I love the sound

Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
DecreasingDave,
If you are looking for quiet you might want to take a look at Magnaflow duals for the 6.0. They use a 24"X7" muffler vs. an 18"X6" for MBRP. Installation is easier, and there is more clearance between the top of the tailpipe and the bottom of the bed. This extra clearance makes it nice if you have a 5th wheel hitch. Their premium systems are 436 stainless and have a lifetime warranty, plus the tips are welded on not clamped. There 409 systems come with a 6 year warranty but do not include tips.
The drawback, they only come with a 4" down-pipe, but they will fit without firewall modification.
We stock both MBRP and Magnaflow, if you have any questions give us a call or drop us an e-mail. JS.
Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
Thanks for the replies everyone.
George C,
I was hoping that you would reply. I remember reading your post about the dual mufflers. I just couldn't remember if it was the inside noise or the outside noise that you thought was too loud for your taste. I guess I just don't have the beans to spend on 2 mufflers for an already pricey dual exhaust. I have to find another solution.
Dan,
At 75mph (+/-) is where I found the sound to be annoying. I live in Arizona and our speed limit is 75mph pretty much everywhere. It was just too much to live with. Bad enough I have to talk over my kids and my wife.
Gos,
Does Magnaflow make the Cat-back duals?? My thought is maybe I can get the MBRP downpipe, testpipe, then MF cat-back duals. I would then have the 3.5" downpipe but the best part of the MF dual set-up. Overall, how does MF compare to MBRP pricewise??
Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
Dave, I think the extra muffler was about $100.00 bucks. That's all you need. You can cut a 4" piece of pipe from the intermediate pipe to join the mufflers, and that's it.
I loved the sound of the exhaust in-town, but I couldn't take the drone at 70mph. The second muffler eliminated the drone completely.
Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
DecreasingDave,
No cat back duals from Magnaflow. We are working on them to get us 6.0 duals with 3.5" down-pipes. It is a slow go, but we are making progress. If you are not in a hurry, this may be the easiest way to go.
Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
DecreasingDave,
These trucks need some sort of a muffler. More to tone the exhaust than anything else. I personally don't like the cackling of a straight pipe. It really is rather quiet in my opinion on the inside. People talk about how loud they are in side and the drone, etc. This truck is QUIET compared to my 96 Mustang Cobra with off road H pipe, and MAC cat back. You want drone, let's go for a ride at 2200 RPM's in the car

Re: MBRP Duals vs. Straight pipe - Interior sound compare
4" turbo back straight pipe here, and cruising even on the itnerstate is fine. only downside to the straight pipe is that when accelerating, the engine revs and when it gets to 2100-2200 rpms just kinda pauses and i guess the torque converter starts to lock up causing the truck to accelerate. the bad thing about this is 2200 rpms is LOUD! it also gets pretty loud around 2800 rpms. this is only with the windows down though. windows up its just a little drone at 2200, which i can live with. sounds AWESOME!
by the way, had magnaflow before, and it was EXTREMELY quiet. windows up it was hard to tell exhaust was there. ive got sound clips of the difference between the 2 if youre interested.

Dan,
The difference is that you bought your Cobra for 1 reason only, and it's not to haul the family on vacation 1,000 miles away towing a heavy trailer.
Cobras are supposed to be loud.
