Placement of sender for water temp guage?

I have an 05 6.0 and I am installing some guages. I have not been able to find a place to install the sending unit for the water temp. Is there a plug anywhere on the intake or block to install the sending unit? If there is no place to install on the motor, how accurate would it be to install on the heater hose?

TIA,
Brian Moore

Re: Placement of sender for water temp guage?

Most members put it in the drivers side block drain using an autometer adapter part # ATM 2268...they get readings within a few degrees +/- of the message center...

When I went to try it that way I wasn't too sure it would work due to the fact that the ATM 2268 adapter doesn't let the temp sensor protrude into the stream of the coolant...so here is what I did and my results...

I went in line with the heater hose using an adapter from a water temp gauge I had on my ATV...it was aluminum 3/4" in and out with a threaded opening for the temp sensor...it worked perfect letting the temp sensor come in full flow of the coolant...

My results are not very accurate...with normal driving and the message center at 90-91C(194-196) the gauge would read 212-215F...but if I turn the A/C on the temp will drop down to or never go past 190-192 no matter how hot the message center says it is...

So I'm going to move the sender down to the block drain and see what happens...

Re: Placement of sender for water temp guage?

Thanks for the help. How do you get the message center to read the actual temp of the coolant?

Thanks,

Re: Placement of sender for water temp guage?

press and hold the right 2 buttons then turn the key on...you'll see test appear in the message center...let go of the buttons.

The gauges will do a test sweep...

To scroll through the readings press the far right button(reset)untill you see engine temp...it's in celsius so you have to convert to F...

Re: Placement of sender for water temp guage?

Just got through installing my water temp gauge sending unit. There is a plug under the exhaust manifold on on the drivers side towards the rear of the block. It is by wear you put the pyrometer. It looks like a plug with a allen head socket in it. You will know because coolant will come out when it gets loose. I hope this helps. (A little late is better better than none at all).
