i have about $400 i want to spend on a programmer but i dont want the mess or clutter of guages. HOW MANY PEOPLE are running a programmer w/o guages?
I was going to order the 4" Cool Duals last week but started looking around and talking some more and he told me he has a 5" turbo back for 375.00. It has a 3.5" downpipe, place for factory cat (or delete pipe) then flares to 5". is it worth the money for that bit of 5"? What kind of difference will i notice?
After owning gauges I wouldn't run a stock truck w/o gauges. They provide too much valuable information. I think most guys that have gauges would agree. The gauges are most definitely not just there cuz they look cool.
The guys are right, in a word GAUGES!!!!!! You paid a lot fo the 6.0 engine, don't let 250-300.00 get in the way of protecting it. By the way a 5 inch with a cat and a 3.5 inch down pipe is pretty much just for looks, performance wise you'd be just as well off in a 3.5 to 4.0 with a cat, and it'll have less tendancy to drone like a 5.0 will. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help you with them.
I was running stock lifted truck for a while without gauges and now that I know what my SCt does I prob could run my tunes without gauges however you have a good size lift. That plays a very major role in EGTs I would atleast get a pyro...

Lovinpsd is correct after installing gauges i know know what they read in all situation and dont need to watch them as much. You don't need all three it is nice but you should have at least the pyrometer.

I was wondering if anyone has read the artical in the Diesel Builder Magazine? In the big three shootout between Edge, Hypertech and Superchips, Hypertech won the shootout between the three. In this artical it said the Hypertech has pre-programmed safe EGT operation that instantaneously reads ongoing engine conditions, so the installed program doesn't require an EGT gauge. The artical said it is more consistant by the dino and the drivers who tested the tuners. Get the magazine and check the numbers. According to this first time head to head compitition Hypertech came out on top. All are good products but it depends on your type of use. Artical found in Spring 2006 Artical.
Marketing Fluff. Their are much better tuners out there, but you need guages. I too once ran my 7.3 without guages, but won't ever do it again, after seeing how egt's can go up quickly with hot tunes.

I'm not proud of it, but I do run without any aftermarket gauges. However, I don't do any towing. Truck is just for looks and an occasional smoke in an imports windshield.

Gauges are your best friend...I currently have 16 (8 Autometers and 2 4 gauge digital monitors)...17 if you count the heads-up display on the glass.
hell...I run 3 pyros....1 in each manifold and 1 post turbo....you can never have too much info if you're gonna hot-rod a 7000 lbs + truck.

pajius,
I have an '04 F350 and am considering the HyperTech PP-III for the same reason. I read the article saying safe EGT's in the highest setting, even for towing to the max of my truck. Not the highest horsepower programmer, just the safest?!?
Since you have a PP-III, I wonder if I put on the highest setting on my otherwise stock truck, will I be able to smoke my buddy's '03 Dodge 1500 2wd crew cab with the Hemi, K&N cold air intake, and HyperTech programmer? From a stand and/or from a 60 mph roll? I see your sig, so I imagine you have "tested" your truck against one or two of them. Just trying to see what I'll be getting into.

I have an EGT guage under my dash and a hypertech programmer...I have seen too many diesels scatter after keeping their truckas >1400 degrees too long...cheap insurance....
