Question for the Tuners

I recently had some codes cleared at a local shop. When they ran a self test on my truck the turbo went through a series where it ramped up in sound to a very loud point. I am assuming it was manipulating the VGT solenoid to do this. Is there anyway to set this in a tune so at idle the turbo will whistle louder than normal? If so will it effect drivability or the life of the turbo?

Yes, when the vanes are open it will idle deeper. When they are slightly closed, it whistles more. Right in the middle is the best to keep them from sticking. About 50% duty cycle is where the later reflashes run them. The early flashes were closed much more.

Then I believe when he ran the self test the vanes started all the way open which caused a very deep lugging sound and then it stopped and ramped up to a very high pitched LOUD whistle.

Are you able to program them to be closed say 65% at idle and then go into your normal programing above idle? What makes them stick?

Sure, that's not a problem.

What makes them stick? Rust from not using the truck often enough.

i think carbon is more of an issue with having them stick,i could be wrong though. I have always been told that these trucks need to be run hard evry now and then to keep the vaines moving and from sticking. Babying the truck all the time can actually be a problem for the turbos

I'm not quite sure at what point these noises are taking place. But if they are doing it when you are starting the motor, mine in sig does the same thing. When I start the engine I hear a v-8 rumble type sound, then she starts to whislte. To me it sounds like the exhaust system makes the rumble noise until it pressurizes when the turbo gets up to speed, takes about 2 secs. Mine has done it since new, before and after mods, tuned or not. I hope its normal. And I hope that's what you are talking about.

My truck whistles at idle just like normal. When the tech was running the self test it closes down the vanes and then opens them up all the way. While the test was going on the turbo was almost 5 times louder than normal. I will have to find out if the vanes were almost all the way closed or if they were all the way open. It is extremely loud though.
