Running problems after Intake install

I just picked up a MAC Air intake. Very nice looking. I have a 04 F350 with a fairly new factory turbo and 100k on the motor. It runs great, but it will pop and carry on from the intake under slight load and at highway speeds. Sometimes it's fine driving around. I only had it on the highway once and it was pretty bad. What gives?

Re: Running problems with my new CAI

I forgot to mention that at one point as I pulled away around 20mph the motor lost power and let a good puff of smoke out the tail pipe.

Re: Running problems with my new CAI

Probably the air intake air sensor. Several ait intake units have had problms with the sensor. Look there 1st. Hooked up right? Talk to the supplier, they probably have had to deal with this on other customers' trucks...

Re: Running problems with my new CAI

I just had to screw the stock sensor in the mount on the new pipe with the stock screws. Pretty straight forward.

Re: Running problems with my new CAI

How is it angled relative to intake air compared to the stock unit? If the angle is off, or the location has much different local flow, it will give false readings to the puter and you'll get strange behavior,

Re: Running problems after Intake install

If your filter is the oiled type, the most common type...
You may have had atomized oil contaminate the M.A.F. sensor.

Try taking it out and cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner, but DONT touch the sensor itself, The oil from your fingers will also cause it to give erratic readings.

All the luck.

Re: Running problems after Intake install

Oiled filter can cause a big problem. Haven’t heard of any new from the box filters causing problems. It’s when people clean and re-oil their filters they cause problems or serious damage. DO not Repeat DO not over oil the filter, excess oil will coat the sensor, or worse get down into the engine and that’s all folks. Treat it like a boat B reak O ut A nother T housands or more for repairs. Best to clean the filter when you have a day or two. After cleaning let it air dry…
Trick – (If you have a newer style dryer with a shoe rack insert).
After rinsing off the filter, shake excess water off put it in the dryer on the shoe rack and set to air-dry no heat for no more then 20 minutes, repeat till dry. If you have, a good dryer set to lowest heat for no more then 10 -15 minutes let it cool off (do not let the filter get warm to touch) and repeat till dry. After it is completely dry (air dry about a day). Give it a light coat of oil let it sit so the cotton can soak in the oil. Then re-spray to even out the color and stop. Do not over oil, ever…. You can always add another (lite) coat of oil but removing it is not easy, using forced air as in an air compressor not recommended. Best to re-clean and start over. After you have cleaned and oiled the filter a couple of times you should have the hang of it, just remember that’s when your most likely to over oil it so don’t get sloppy or try to rush the process.
Also before, you start jacking things around on your truck, or running to the dealer call the Manufacturer of your intake, explain the situation there maybe a fix they can send you. If so your set – or are you.
It could be there is a minor problem with your truck that is not getting fixed or they do not have a fix for yet. Bummer at this point I would remove all after market add on products till the problem is found and resolved correctly. Otherwise, it could get ugly trying to get the problem fix under warranty. Sad but it is what it is.
