Looking at all the ford forums about adding power (even alittle) and everything I read says add head studs and head gaskets even if you only add a programmer. I dont know much about all this but dont want to waste money (especially that much) if not needed. I found a set of new head gaskets (18 or 20mm whichever I want) and arp studs for 650$ is this a good price and how much would it cost to have installed if I cant do it myself? What does it take and how long would it take to do it myself with help from a friend? what will it help with? and does it make the motor pretty much bulletproof? also should I wait to get this until symptoms occur or should I get it done right away, I do tow a boat in fishing season and go on alot of hunting trips in hunting season....thanks for all info in advance. More than one opinion would be even better
Where are you located? Maybe someone can give you some advice on a shop to do the install based on your location.
If you turn your truck up, you will need studs and gaskets at some point if you want to do it right. An SCT tuner, with tunes from Innovative Diesel would be your best bet for getting a tune that works well for what you want to do.

You should probably start a new thread for this, or search, but here is the only thing you need to know for coolant filter setups. Well worth the money.
Whether you tune your truck or not, your going to want them. Its $650 for the studs and gaskets but what about everything else? Labor, Oil cooler re-build, updated fittings etc.

Studs from browns diesel $400. Gaskets from some vendors can range from $100-$300. I think I've got a line on the $100 gaskets. Rebuild the oil cooler $250 ish.. Plus gaskets Plus labor. You will be looking at 2000-3000 for all inclusive... I would decide what you want to do and how long you plan to keep the truck. I tuned mine and have ran it for 2yrs with out issues. Now I'm about to replace the oil cooler. When I do that I'm doing studs and all.

i live in miami and have been taking mine over to GAW..... they want about 3500 for everything....that includes studs gaskets.. oil change collant change and im guessing all the other gaskets needed in the process.... but they charge 750 i think for the studs... so if you get them for 400 you cut 350 of the price....

holy cow thats crazy expensive. I know its alot of labor but looking at around 3-4k for one upgrade?? Ill have to think about this. I was thinking labor would be double price of parts so around 1800-2k but wow.....my stomaches sick
lubbock I think I will wait till I need to replace something else as you did. I dont plan on running high performance tunes just some extra HPs for towing and fun. Thanks.

6.0S do not tolerate tuning well,i know everyone who hasnt ever had a problem will bash me now,but being realistic studs are a good idea with ANY tuning.cleaning the egr on a reg basis too as well as a coolant filter.

hey everyone, im new here at diesel stop. im running a edge programmer with a afe intake & magnaflow exhaust on my 04. i keep the tuner on stage 3(power level1) everywhere i go, and turn it back to stock when towing which i dont really tow alot anyways. im not a very agressive driver but given the right mood (either really good or really pissed lol) i like to crank it up to stage 5 and run it thru the gears(im guessing once a week or less on average). i know head studs are a good idea tune or not, and i plan on it eventually but am i living on borrowed time the way my truck and driving style is right now? and by the way the truck only has 33k on it, i bought it last month from my uncle who drove it like a grandma when it wasnt sitting in the driveway, and only towed probably 5 times with it if this info helps. any solid info would be appriciated, thanks

Reason: rules violations
tattoo I plan on doing both the egr cleaning and coolant filter but havnt decided on head studs yet.....that just sounds rediculous
Sorry if I missed this, but is your truck out of warranty? If you worried about putting out the 3-4 grand leave it till it blows up stock, without a tune (if it does). Then find a ford dealership that will put studs in for you as part of your warranty work.

Yea there is still a chance it will blow a gasket. You are running on borrowed time.. I'm not sure how many levels the edge has but any tune without gauges is asking for trouble. If I had to take a gander I'd say 35% or so of these trucks will blow a gasket tuned stock.. The statistic could be higher or lower, just a guess.
