Success, for now

Well mission accomplished.

I installed a MBRP SS-304 "cool duals" exhaust(4" Turbo back), a AFE stage 2 Proguard 7 air intake, I relocated my EGT sensor from post turbo(dealer did it) to the exhaust manifold, and installed a Hypertech Max Energy programmer (stage 1 for now). I'll see how stage 1 goes and then try 2 and 3. Took truck for a short test drive, sounds good and goes good. So far initial mileage is improved, but I'll need a lot more time to get a good idea on mileage improvements.

All of the components went in well, directions were pretty clear and easy to follow. The exhaust was the one that worried me the most as I had never done exhaust on any vehicle before, but it went well.

Did I mention it sounds good

Doug

When you say mileage has improved, what kind of numbers are you seeing?

Initial numbers show 100 to 200 km more range on a tank, the 200 maybe quite optimistic, but the 100 is a little more realistic. All numbers are from the dash board computer display which when I have checked in the past is accurate. On a trip this past weekend we got 10 mpg on the way out and 10.4 mpg on the way back. The lower number going out is due to the stopping and starting in weekend traffic, trip home was all at speed, 60-65 mph. The best number I ever got at any time before the upgrades was 9.4 mpg driving at 55-60 mph, that number dropped off to 9 mpg by the end of the trip, so on our first trip we're looking at a 1 - 1.4 improvement, which I'm pleased with. I'm going to run another tank in work trim, and then change to level 2 on the programmer, I'll run that for a while, then we have a trip planned, so I can check again. Then after that I'll go to level 3 and then se which gives me the best mileage and then leave it there.

As far as towing with new upgrades, from a start not a great difference, but merging on to the highway and passing are much improved.

EGT got just over 1000* at the highest but most of the time it was around 900-950.

I'll keep you posted.

Doug

Changed to level 2 with the Max energy programmer. Initially on a 30 min highway run, mileage went up to 16.8 mpg running at 65-70 mph(just running with traffic flow). That was at the begininng for a tank, but it was still better than the 15.5 I got before at the same point in a tank run. The 16.8 number was with the truck in work trim which is a 3500 lb slide in cap and the 15.5 number was with the cap off. The final number for the tank run was 13.6, which is approx 2.5-3 mpg better than what I was getting before. I have to admit a couple of WOT runs just to check out the power. For the most part I am driving the truck as I did before. Normal highway driving puts the EGT at 800-900, sometimes gets to 1000 but not too often. I'll keep a close eye on the EGT when I tow. Heading out today for a week camping, going to have the TT on, so I can check my mileage towing, and EGT's.
I'll post those numbers when I return.

Doug

Have more mileage numbers.

Heading out 12 mpg. coming home 11.5 mpg. Maybe a head wind coming home or maybe downhill there and uphill back, not really sure, but still a improvement over previous numbers (3 mpg improvement over stock)

EGT's still stayed under 1000*, usually around 900*, however at one point I got caught in the left lane going past some slower traffic, up a slight grade, had my foot in it pretty good EGT went to 1200* but as soon as I moved back into the right lane and let off the throttle the EGT came back to where it had been. It wasn't a long trip, maybe 270 miles (450 Km), used 3/4 tank, each way which included a few runs into town and running around the campground to the beach etc. Based on what I remember getting before, I probably saved a 1/2 tank of fuel.

I'll run a few more tanks on level 2, and then try level 3, we have another trip planned in August, so I'll see how it does then. We're heading to Martinsville in October, so hopefully I can find my best mileage setup y then.

Doug
