Superchips vs Predator....My take on them.

Remember, this post is ONLY an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I was a little hesitant when I first saw the numbers Superchips was claiming from their product. The HP numbers were much higher than the Predator on paper. But when I look at the torque numbers between the two they are about the same. This didn't make sense to me. I don't pretend to know much about torque and HP, but to me, torque is HP. If that's the case then the two products in reality should perform about the same.

I have only tested the 150 HP setting so far. Been running since Friday evening. Very first thing I noticed....smoke. Much more than I see from my Predator. It's only for a second or two when I first get on it, but none the less, much more than the Predator smokes.

The power delivery seems to be smoother. Not near as violent when it starts pulling. Much quieter too. When the Predator hits you can really hear the engine come to life. Not so with the Superchips. Almost seems like the engine isn't working as hard. Sounds like it is easier on the engine too. Seat of the pants feel is good. I can't make up my mind which one I think pulls harder. I'm leaning a little toward the Predator for all out power. Could just be my truck though.

Shifting is fine. No complaints there. It's actually a little smoother than the Predator IMO. I don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing. The predator just seems to have a REAL positive shift to it when running through the gears at speeed.

I tow a boat that weighs 7,000 lbs w/ trailer on a regular basis in the summer. I was actually surprised at the amount of performance I'm seeing from the Predator in the Two Safe mode. Tried the Tow Safe on the Superchips tonight around town a little. Doesn't seem to have as much bite to it as the Predator does in this mode. Yet they claim to be putting out almost twice the HP than Diablo in this setting. ?????

We will probably run a couple trucks side by side in the next week or so to help determine which one to go with.

Ultimately the only way to prove any of this is with a Dyno. Anyone stepped up and had this done yet?

Buck

Re: Superchips vs Predator....My take on them.

A better test for the high settings may be 1/4 mile times. In a recent test, the edge made more rear wheel hp than the predator, but was much slower at the strip (shifting?). Also, stacking edge and predator only show 8hp increase, but 1/4 mile times went from 13.90s with predator alone, to 13.60s stacked (combination of higher edge hp and better predator shifting?). Edge alone struggled to get 14.20s. I am anxious to hear of any results. I use the lower settings for towing, and only use the high settings to race, so if the superchips provides better 1/4 mile times, I will have to get one.

Something I also keep getting caught up in are the advertised "numbers". SC makes power way out into higher RPM's so I might can see the 200HP gain over stock if you could see a dyno and see the 200 HP gain somewhere in the 3500-4200 RPM range where a stock 6.0 is dropping fast.

What I heard was they saw 80 HP "gains at peak". The advertsied numbers are "peak gains".

I'm happy with the SC although I'd like to be able to have the ability to tweak/customize the shift points and line pressure myself, but I'd probably blow it up.

Re: Superchips vs Predator....My take on them.

I would also be interested in Preator and SC 1/4 miles times on the same truck. A couple runs at stock, then Predator, and then SC.

Actually it would be awesome if the same truck could have the Edge, Quad, and TS modules thrown on them for their 1/4 mile times as well.

Anyone up to this challenge? There's got to be someone out there with the capability to do this.

Re: Superchips vs Predator....My take on them.

I will do it, if someone will loan me the chips. Already have edge and predator. I would also be happy to test any aftermarket filter/intake systems(stock has produced best ets, so far). My next planned trip to the strip is Wednesday night, May 26, at Brainerd International Raceway (in minnesota).

If I get the SC by then I'll send it to you.

I'm sure someone can loan you a Quad 125HP box by then.

Re: Superchips vs Predator....My take on them.

I think I'm going to hold off for a week or two until the *&^%$#@ contests are over.

Right now I can't make up my mind between

1. SC
2. Predator
3. Edge with Attitude
4. The new Quad box looks nice too if it shifts good

Decisions, decisions...
