That is a question with way toooo many variables to be able to give a yes or no answer. Altitude, towing weights, fuel pedal habits, exhaust or intake installed etc etc. I have seen 1300+ degrees on 7.3 or 6.0 that are stock with enough heavy foot and towing weights, hard to do but can be done. If in doubt whip it.... oh wait a mintue that's something else. When in doubt get a pyro, the trucks cost 35,000.00 or more a pyro is less the $150.00, cheap insurance in my opinion! We have steering column mounts that hold one gauge, but in reality if you have a auto tranny you need a REAL tranny gauge if you tow any significant weighs, and what the heck get a boost gauge as it's REAL fun to watch on a 6.0 as compared to a 7.3 the VRT turbo really get the boost up fast as compared etc. Call us if you have any questions etc.

OK here goes: 800 ft above sea level, towing 8000lbs, reasonable accelerating...no hot rodding, stock intake, 4" turbo -back exhaust. I have a 6-sp but I will get a pyro..I have one on another 7.3 IDI I own ans drive by it with the jacked up fuel.
Any other suggestions? Thanks..
I tow a TT that weighs over 8000 lbs loaded. I use the Predator in the
heavy tow mode only. I have absolutely no problems using it. No coolant lose, no extreme heat, tranny shifting is smooth. I will be putting the stock tune back in after my last camping trip. My truck runs great without the Predator, but it is awesome with it.

My 5er weighs around 6500 loaded "not over" This July I towed to OR in the Economy Mode and back home in the Tow Mode. Didn't notice any difference in EGR's to worry about in either mode. Just wanted to see if there was any difference. SC says you can tow anything under 8000 lb in Economy.

I'd recommend a pyro with any tuning device when towing a heavy load. Personally, I can tow a 5,000lb race car and trailer with no problem on our High HP tune. However, depending on the altitude, weather conditions, etc. you are better off keeping an eye on the EGT's. Anything over 7500lbs and I run our tow tune, which pulls as cool as the stock truck and still makes 65+rwhp.

I tow my 6000 boat with my predator on the 100 horse mode, going up a hill I have to really watch egt's, but it doesnt seem to run really hot, not as much as expected, but I really like the way it shifts and teh way it has the power when you need it. If you dont have an egt gauge I wouldnt really tow anything in the big tune, and as stated before the towing mode works really well too. I did my towing almost by accident, my truck had the big tune in it when I went to get my boat from the lake for winter, thouhgt the tuner was with me and was going to change programs when I got there, but the programmer was on my kitchen table.

My question to you is, what will that do to your truck in the long
run, towing that much weight in the 100hp mode? TIC-TOC, TIC-TOC?
BE careful.

well like everything it could be a big 'ol time bomb. I try to drive it pretty easy when I tow, but heh, who can ever be nice all the time? I drive about 160 to 200 miles a day and tow heavy weight probably 3 times or more a week, I havent really had many probs yet. Im sure as far as longevity it might die before yours, but nothing lives forever. My truck actually does well towing, the highest Ive seen on my egt is around 1300, which is high, but not near as bad as a lot of other people out there towing nothing. I guess time will tell, i will let you know when something else explodes!

I was just about to ask this very question when I saw this post. I have a 30' TT/Toy Hauler. Laoded with Dirt Bikes, water, fuel and everything else to last a weekend I'm at 11,700 lbs. I've been towing in the 40 hp "Towing Mode" of the Preditor with no problems. My exhaust tempature is steady at 750 degrees 4" after the turbo. Down here in Florida there's not many hills so that's not a concern however it usually down shifts going over bridges and overpasses. Again, with the cruise set at 75 the exhaust temp never breaks 800 degrees. Does anyone think there's any potential problems?? I was going to ask if the 60 hp "Economy Tune" would be OK. It seems like the more horse power you give it, the better it performs. I'm like some of the other guys, I take it very easy when I'm towing. At nearly 12,000 lbs., you really know it's back there at any speeds. Oh, by the way, at 75 I'm usually pushing 18-22 pounds of boost depending on the head winds.
To sum it all up;
Tune: 40 hp Towing mode
EGT 4" behind turbo: 750-800
Trans temp: 160
Boost: 18-22
Trailer Weight: 11,700 lbs
Speed: 75 mph
RPM: 1900
MPG: 10-11
Coolant Temp: Below half on the idiot gauge
With these stats, do you think the 60 hp "Economy Tune" would be too much??
