Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

I want to add a box to my truck, but I am more concerned about my tranny than the high horsepower setting. I dont want to go the "tuner" route as I think the box type is better. I know a lot of guys here have the Edge and Quad, but in the reading I have done it seems the Banks Six Gun might be the safest on the tranny. What do you guys think. Help me out.
Thanks

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

I think it's all in how you run them. Once the tranny is shifting right then it's really a matter of how much abuse you put into it. Any of the boxes on a high setting are going to be bad, but I do kinda think you are right in saying the banks. I think they make there products with alittle more safty and alil less power. Anyway, like i said, a low power settin on the boxes I think should be pretty much the same, now you need to control to keep it turned down

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

You asked for opinions, so here goes:

I spoke to a VERY knowledgeable transmission source about how much power can be added without significant damage to the tranny. His remarks were that about any of the boxes up to around 100hp can be used by themselves, if you use your head. However, if you are racing your truck, towing overweight, stacking boxes/tuners, putting a lift & big tires on, etc, then any and all will damage the tranny to some degree or another. Bottom line is, it's basically up to you whether there is a safe box or not.

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

Thanks for the replies. I mostly want the box for drivability and fuel economy as a second. The Edge box is what I lean twards most because of the low boost fueling adjustments. I can't see where the Banks has that, only different settings.

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

IMO if you want drivability and fuel economy, leave it stock and drive it conservativly.

SC is the only one that tunes the tranny, so the next step would be a SCT wiht only a tranny tune to bump the line pressure a bit to keep the tranny alive longer. Maybe a mild tune if you actualy do want a little more get up and go.

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

pretty much all the boxes and tuners on the market are adjustable from low economy/tow tunes to extreme/race tunes, and everywhere in the middle. and for the most part, any box in a 50-60hp tune is going to shift fine. something like the edge/attitude is nice because of the low boost fuel, so power comes on pretty early. some of the other tuners and high hp boxes like the quad 160, power comes on like a freight train, weak in low rpms but around 2500rpms or so takes off like a missle. i havent tried the edge/attitude in lower settings, but it shifts absolutely perfect in 5/5. the quad 160 shifted flawlessly as well...

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

Does anyone know if another company has a low boost fuling option like Edge?

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

Quadzilla has some tunes that fuel really early, but for fuel economy that is not really a good thing. The Quadzilla 75hp tune in the 160 module adds 100 miles to a tank of fuel when compared to stock on my truck.

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

Since I have removed my Quadzilla my fuel milage has dropped noticably. When I kept in in the lower setting I could see a 1-2 MPG gain over stock. Ford is forced to tune these trucks for emmissions. not fuel milage. Teamroper get better fuel milage with his original progamed 2003 dually then I get with my flashed SRW 2004.

That is a lot of miles. I would like something like that, that would make it a little more fun to drive and when crusing it would improve my miledge.

Re: Who has the most safe "box" upgrade.

I was talking with a guy that works at the Louisville truck plant, and he said he was watching the trucks being tested when they first came out. They run the piss out of them on a dyno, and at a certain rpm, the tranny would give out. They flashed the computer to keep the revs down below critical failure and put the truck to market. Don't know if they've fixed the problem, or just keep the engines from hitting that level of rpm's.
