I have a 2007 with captains chairs w/ fold down armrests. will a console out of a 2008-2010 fit in mine? and would I have to take the armrests off? what about the center seat out of a 99-07, would that be a better choice?
Pretty much takes pplace of the arm rests. My wife still uses the one on her side. I don't. It will work, it will rubb but it is very livable the 08 console is probably the best thing I have done to my truck. Infact when I traded my 04 that was the first thing I pulled out and put into the new truck. If I buy another 99-07 it will be one of the first things done to it. Usable cupholders, a flat upper surface, perfect height for a arm rest and tons of usable space. It is a win win.
I'm about to ask a dumb question, I think. I have a '99 with the center seat that doubles as a center console, no captains chairs. Would one of the '08 consoles replace that center seat? Please don't make me feel stupid if this is absurd lol.
actually yest this will still work if you have the 40/20/40 split bench. it would be probably the most ideal seat setup to use. one thing to mention is that the 08+ colors are not a exact match to the 99-07 colors. the tan is closer in my opinion than the gray but either way i painted mine to match. here is a thread that is about this very setup where i posted a few pictures. pictures start around post #9 08 console conversion - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
Thanks! Yeah, I have the 40/20/40 split seats. What about the '08 center jump seat? How do they compare to the '99 center jump seat? I like having the cupholders built into the center console. I have the light gray interior. When you paint it to match, does it look 100% oem, or can you tell it was painted?
I know the material used for cloth changed in 05. As for color I'm not sure again with the cloth but I still don't see the xl or xlt cloth looking right. Weither or not painting will look right depends on the paint quality, color chosen and the prep work. I scuffed and cleaned mine and it came out nice. The paint on the front still looks like the original install. Where the arm rests rub the paint has come off. Not noticable unless you are looking for it. Btw. The cupholders in the 08 console are far better than the fold down and the 02-07 console (99-01 I believe had just a tray and no actual cupholders)
Yeah, I looked at the threads your link lead to on two different forums, and the painted console matched very well. I didn't think about it until after I posted, if the plastic doesn't match, neither will the seat fabric, and I can't paint that. I like the look of the trucks with the new console in. Makes the front look roomier to me. I don't think the middle seat has been used but maybe once since i bought the truck anyway. It's a straight drive, so the shifter is all in the way of someone sitting up front in the middle.
I still have the crappy stock cupholder in my '99, and to upgrade it to the '01-'07 style would cost me around 70 bucks. 70 bucks would be a good chunk on the console, which has better consoles, much more room, and looks better to boot!
Don't let the painting scare you. It is very easy. The paint though is not as easy to find. I ordered a gauge pod at one time and like the way the paint matched so I used the rest of the can on the console.
1) First get a pair of gloves, I used nitrate. This keeps oils from you hand from contaminating the paint.
2) Next use paint thinner, acetone, alcohol, even soap and water can work. Remove all the oils and dirt. I used alcohol since it is cheap avalible and I already had some.
3) Basically to prep the console use either a green or red scotch brite pad. The blue is not aggresive enough. Basically we are trying to scratch the surface for the paint to have adhesion. Use medium pressure similar to scrubbing a pan or a dish or even sanding.
4) You still have the gloves on right? Use a rag and your choice cleaner again to wipe all the parts down.
5) By this time you are ready for paint. My advice is to use the garage or a room that does not have the chance for wind, dirt, bugs etc. Find a elevated place or if you plan to use the floor get a board or plastic or something as a drop cloth. Also if you do this on the floor make sure to sweep the floor reguardless of is it looks dirty or not. If you don't you will end up with dirt in your paint.
6) Paint your parts. Try to just barely coat the parts. Remember to much to fast and you will have runs. Give it a light coat then go do something for 10-20mins. I would say 3-6 coats. I would paint then go watch tv and drink a beer. I also painted till I literally ran out of paint. I got about 4-5 coats and it wasn't a new can of paint so 1 can shoulf have you more than covered.
7) Let the panels dry for about 5-6hrs minimum so you don't smudge or finger print them when assebling or handling them.
I'm not a painter, I do hvac/refrigeration/ and plumbing.
