I have looked back through some posts about the zoodad mod but can't really get a conclusive answer on exactly what it is. Is it more like a ram air or cold air type thing. Sorry to be so uneducated!

Sorry but after more looking I think I have found the explanation I am looking for, and it doesn't seem like a really good idea.

07six_o..... you don't notice cooler temps when towing heavy loads up grade with the zoodad mod?
strokersix, I have never done the zoodad mod to my truck but have some friends that have done it.I would not do it because it lets more ways for dirt to enter the box.It may work but you would have to put an after market filter and there all junk.I have worked for a filter company for 16 years and im telling you the factory filter is the best for stopping fine dust.I pulled my factory filter when my truck had 10k miles on it and banged it on a table at work.wallaah, looked like i had been at the beach.an after market filter would have not stopped that much sand.THATS JUST MY OPINION,I would rather keep that stuff out of my motor.

Zoodad works just fine with a stock filter setup and I've had no issues with my filter not lasting; I changed my first one out around 50k. The engine is going to pull air - either from the front or any place it can. Openning up the front just ensures you're getting the coolest air possible.

The ZOODAD mod does provide the best way for outside air to get into the motor. Leaving the OEM filter in place provides the bestlevel of protection from the dirt that the aftermarket may allow to pass. Plenty have done the ZOODAD with positive results, I for one have done it to two trucks and have nothing bad to say about the mod.

Some stock stuff, some modded stuff, some deleted stuff.....
I have mine done and noticed right away the air suction when I start the motor and put my hand by the grill near the new opening. More direct cooler air when pulling helps keep it a tad cooler instead of pulling practically from the warm engine compartment.
When I had my 2001 F350 PSD I did the Zoodad Mod along with changing to the AFE air filter. Did not notice much difference, especially with the AFE ,so returned to stock ford.
still have the AFE.

I did the zoodad and then took the front "snorkle" off the stock air cleaner system. i still use the stock air filter. it seems to me that doing both really effectively gets more cold air into the air intake system.
I did it on my truck about 3 months ago. I haven't noticed any real impressive MPG changes but can definately feel to suction through the grille when the truck is running. The only real issue I have is when I am washing the truck I have to be sure to not shoot water directly through that section of the grille. Have never had a problem with rain getting in though. I would not change out my stock filter for an aftermarket one. Too much research on the net that says the stock is THE BEST available for this truck. I don't see how the stock setup can be better than the zoodad mod (granted it does prevent more debris from entering the filter but the filter is replacable). I imagine the stock setup is like trying to suck air through a straw.

Maybe you should just seal your intake so that none of that icky, dirty air can get in....
the second picture in the photoalbum link is looking in to the filter through the screen i used. so after 3 months the front of the filter still looked clean. i had the radiator replaced 2 days ago and the filter was moved out of the way and it still looks just as clean as the picture. i did remove a large bee from the screen one time, but i see no issue with opening the grill up and letting cold air in directly into the air filter.
