12 Volt Oil Pump

I saw someone had posted a link to a 12 volt pump. I need to buy one to gather oil from the resturants and also to pump bio-diesel when needed. I found this one at Northern Tools. Is it worth the $$$

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

I use a Shurflo 110 volt rated at 5 GPM to transfer from barrels to the processor. Today it took 30 minutes to transfer 36 gallons of 110 degree oil. 3 foot suction (height of 55 gallon drum) 3 foot lift (top of 50 gallon heater) Kind of wimpy, but it is paid for.

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

Depends on what you want to do with it. I used to have one of those pumps to pump my biodiesel from the barrel, through a final polishing filter into the tank. The system pumped fine until the filter got a little particulate in it, then it stopped almost completely. The pump just doesn't put enough pressure out for some applications, so I used one of the 1" clear water pumps and the final filtration system is perfect now. However, if all you want to do is pump warm (or hot) oil, then that pump is well worth it, portability and power.

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

This is a good pump for oil transfer. It is essentially a gear pump using solid vanes or tabs on a shaft. I find flexible impeller pumps dont' take the thicker oils as well. This pump does better but isn't ideal for cold oil (as in wintertime oil collection).

Hatchetman is right about the particulates. I didn't have an intake screen on mine and it sucked up some crumbs and such way inside the pump. End result: broken plastic rigid vane inside the pump. Fortunately, Northern keeps rebuild kits in stock though not in the catalog.

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

I bought a this http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...t_6970_508_508

Pretty much the same pump just with the hoses.
It doesn't work for winter collection. You will need a screen for the pickup and it gets clogged with particals pretty easily, then your banging it on the side or whatever and oil is flyin everwhere. It'll pump 50gal in about 5 min (hot). But, beware that it has a 20min duty cycle and if your pullin thicker oil it gets hot(the motor) really quick. Oh, I almost forgot, it's really loud!
I use it for transfering oil in the garage not for collection.

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

This one is a little pricey, but its a really good one. I have the AC version and have had NO problems at all.

Re: 12 Volt Oil Pump

I used one of those, didn't do squat and the oil was warm, all it did was drain the battery it was hooked to.

I just use a hand crank barrel pump for oil measure and transfer. The restaurant where I pick up oil puts it in the 5 gallon cubies for me, and I do a pickup once a week, preferable during the weekends.
